Even though some fans may have grown weary of Ubisoft, it appears they’ve managed to win back their favor with the exceptional quality of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. Despite many hoping for its downfall, the game has garnered positive reviews and sales thus far, ensuring that the series remains current and significant.
After mastering its open-world RPG gameplay, one might wonder where the series could possibly head next. With Codename Hexe promising a shift towards the supernatural, the question arises: Will this new direction invigorate the gameplay experience?
The primary issue with the Assassin’s Creed series is that there has been an overwhelming amount of content released in recent years, making it difficult for players to keep up. Despite Ubisoft’s efforts to avoid annual releases, the franchise seems to have become overly abundant. However, it was only a short time ago when Mirage came out as an attempt to return the series to its original essence, until Shadows managed to captivate both fans and critics with its engaging gameplay.
After Ubisoft has delivered an expansive open-world experience with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, there’s speculation about whether they might develop a more compact stealth-centric game next. Many enthusiasts enjoyed Assassin’s Creed Mirage due to its focus on stealth and its return to the franchise’s core roots. The upcoming title could build upon those strengths, potentially offering even greater refinement, but we’ll have to wait for a major announcement from Ubisoft to find out.
Previously, Ubisoft announced that Codename Hexe would be the upcoming open-world RPG within the series, making it intriguing to see what’s in store between Shadows and Hexe. Some speculate a smaller stealth game might come next, though no one has been confirmed as the lead for this potential title yet. Fans are also hoping that Basim might return after Mirage, but we’ll have to wait and see if Ubisoft chooses to introduce another recurring protagonist in the future.
At the very least, Ubisoft seems to have managed to shed some of the negative reputation they’ve been carrying around for a while now. Regrettably, this has also impacted the sales of quality games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, but such is life occasionally.

A portion of gamers may struggle to appreciate Ubisoft fully, either because they’ve had issues with employee mistreatment or questionable business tactics. While Assassin’s Creed Shadows attempted to address some of these concerns by scrapping certain premium editions, the past actions of the company linger in the minds of fans. If Shadows can ultimately lead to positive changes within Ubisoft, that would be ideal; however, only time will tell.
Will the upcoming Assassin’s Creed title deviate from its predecessors or risk alienating fans once more? Given that game development is a lengthy process, our only option is to exercise patience and see how it unfolds over time.
