In late 2024, the new drama series “Landman” will debut on Paramount+, created by the acclaimed Taylor Sheridan. Known for his recent successes such as “Lawman: Bass Reeves,” starring David Oyelowo, “1923,” featuring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, and the concluded “Yellowstone,” “Landman” boasts an impressive cast led by Billy Bob Thornton, delivering a stellar performance. Alongside him are Jon Hamm, formerly of “Mad Men,” and Demi Moore, a renowned movie icon.
The story unfolds in West Texas and revolves around Tommy Norris (Thornton), a sharp but gruff oil tycoon. A workplace accident involving one of his teams disrupts his business, leading to a chain of events that jeopardizes every aspect of his life, including confrontations with the drug cartels secretly operating in his oil fields under the cloak of darkness.
The drama series “Landman” was shot on location in West Texas, using genuine spots to boost its realistic feel. Many scenes were captured on active oil fields and within actual businesses controlled by oil magnates and other influential businesspeople. If you’re a Texan, you might recognize some familiar places, but for those not from there, here’s a quick rundown of the real-life filming locations used in Paramount’s “Landman.
A famous Texas stadium was utilized for some early scenes
The main storyline of “Landman” initially revolves around Tommy Norris’ teenage daughter Ainsley (played by Michelle Randolph), who is a celebrated cheerleader dating a prominent football player. In episode 2, the show offers a glimpse into Ainsley performing her routines on the sidelines as she cheers for her boyfriend. These scenes were filmed at Odessa Permian Ratliff Stadium, a renowned Texas football field that serves as home turf for both Odessa High School and Permian High School.
The Odessa Permian Ratcliff Stadium hasn’t been a Hollywood production site for the first time with “Landman.” In fact, this location was also prominently featured in the 2004 sports movie “Friday Night Lights,” which was based on Permian High. While the stadium doesn’t play as significant a role in “Landman” as it did in the sports-themed film, it remains easily identifiable to Texas residents who recognize it from the big screen.
The show filmed all around the Fort Worth area
The television series “Landman” was shot on-site in and around Fort Worth, frequently using its skyline for establishing shots and backdrops, sometimes even substituting it for other city locations. A multitude of real locations within the city are featured throughout the show, many of which are instantly recognizable, such as the Hotel Drover, a well-known local landmark that locals in the vicinity recognize intimately.
In the series focused on West Texas’s oil industry, several interior scenes were filmed at popular Fort Worth locations. Notably, sites where actual landmen convene, such as the Petroleum Club of Fort Worth and the American Association of Professional Landmen’s offices, were used for filming. Scenes featuring Tommy Norris, Monty Miller (Hamm), and their business discussions, along with larger gatherings of oil industry executives, were filmed in these real-life locations. This choice of location enhances the authenticity and realism, making it challenging to replicate with a Hollywood set.
Texas locals recognized plenty of other familiar landmarks
In the release of each new episode of “Landman”, the Texas media enjoyed extensive coverage, delighting over the variety of familiar spots featured in the series. Week after week, publications such as Dallas News and Star Telegram highlighted local references, keeping viewers informed about every location they recognized on screen. For instance, a well-known Italian restaurant in downtown Fort Worth called Don Artemio made an appearance in Episode 7, while Texas Christian University has been prominently featured in multiple scenes, along with the Fort Worth Stockyards and Sundance Square Plaza.
In other locations, the Star Telegram pointed out that the hospital where Norris received treatment for his injured hand (filmed on location) is Faith Community Hospital. Meanwhile, Texas Health Clearfork served as the stand-in for the hospital where Monty Miller was admitted after suffering a heart attack.
In addition to the River Crest Country Club in Episode 3, the Star Telegram uncovered other filming locations. These included numerous houses in Fort Worth and Aledo, serving as both Norris’s residence and various other sets.
Landman also filmed in Midland, Texas
Taylor Sheridan, the mind behind the show “Landman”, chose to establish the series in Fort Worth despite the fact that he grew up in this region and likely has a deeper understanding of it than many viewers or even local residents. However, the main events unfold elsewhere, specifically in Midland, Texas. This location may seem familiar to Sheridan’s fans, as it also serves as the backdrop for his feature film “Hell or High Water”, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. Interestingly, there are rumors that a TV adaptation of this movie might be in the works as well.
In the TV show “Landman,” some Midland locals might find familiar places, such as the Patch Cafe, which was a fictional restaurant inspired by the Pioneer Cafe in reality. Despite its history as a gas station and convenience store, it was transformed into a diner for the series. Interestingly, due to the show’s success, this location will soon become an authentic eatery. Slated to be a Texas-themed diner, the new establishment is yet to choose a name, but it will offer steaks, sandwiches, and ice cream.
