This year’s recipient of the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture–Drama, titled “The Brutalist“, is an expansive historical epic with a runtime close to four hours. Having been screened overseas for most of the year before its domestic release in December, its victory at the Globes took many viewers by surprise. Directed by Brady Corbet, who was previously a cast member in “Melancholia“, it tells the story of a Hungarian-Jewish brutalist architect who escapes the Holocaust and finds himself presented with a life-altering opportunity in America. Despite its raw and unyielding nature, it is surprisingly more nuanced compared to most World War II films.

This year, the film “The Brutalist” has been nominated for a total of ten awards, making it the second most recognized film at the current ceremonies. Among these nominations are three acting categories: Best Leading Actor (won by Adrien Brody at the Globes), Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce). Officially, Dune: Part Two has been declared as the contender for Best Picture in the annals of these awards. This is, indeed, the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series, which is based on Frank Herbert’s novel of the same title. It was more or less anticipated, given the award predictions, and this wasn’t much of a surprise coming.

As a devoted cinephile, I eagerly anticipate the return of Timothée Chalamet as “messiah” Paul Atreides in “Dune: Part Two.” Joining him are a stellar cast including Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Javier Barden, Austin Butler, and others. This action-packed, sci-fi epic follows the fierce battle between the Fremen and House Harkonnen on the desert planet Arrakis. Amongst the upcoming releases, it’s one of the few blockbuster, popcorn movies that won’t disappoint, making it a must-watch, especially for fans of “Wicked” or “The Substance.”

Emilia Pérez, remarkably enough, secured the title of the most nominated film at the Oscars. With an impressive 13 nominations to its credit, this Spanish-French musical production has now set a new record as the most nominated non-English language film in the history of these prestigious awards. The story revolves around Emilia Pérez, who is portrayed as she embarks on a transformative journey following gender-affirming surgery and leaving behind her previous life as a notorious carter kingpin.

This movie features Karla Sofía Gascón (who was nominated for Lead Actress and won a Golden Globe) portraying Pérez, alongside Zoe Saldaña (nominated for Supporting Actress, also winning a Golden Globe), and Selena Gomez. However, following a somewhat controversial win for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, viewers have expressed concerns about several aspects of the film. For instance, while the movie is set in/about Mexico, none of the lead actresses or main creative team are Mexican. Additionally, there are criticisms regarding the portrayal of trans identity within the film.

By January 2025, before the upcoming awards event, Emilia Pérez faced criticism due to offensive social media posts she made between 2019 and 2021. These posts contained derogatory and hateful language targeting various communities such as Islam, Black Lives Matter, International Women’s Day, and her co-star Gomez. I’m Still Here

It came as quite a shock, but “I’m Still Here” has become the first Brazilian film ever nominated for Best Picture – something that wasn’t expected by many. While it’s not unusual for the Oscars to present an unexpected contender, this nomination makes perfect sense after Fernanda Torres’ (also a surprise) win for Best Actress at the Golden Globes. This just goes to show how unpredictable award ceremonies can be!

Under the direction of Walter Salles, the film titled “I’m Still Here” unfolds as a politically charged drama, chronicling the journey of a mother trying to navigate her life during her husband’s disappearance under a military regime in Brazil. It has been recognized with three Oscar nominations, including those for Torres and Best International Feature Film. Given its status as the highest-grossing Brazilian film since the pandemic, it will be intriguing to observe how this nomination impacts the movie’s future. “I’m Still Here” is now showing in cinemas but will be streamable on Plex Player starting March 14, 2025.

The Substance

The Film, being an exceptionally unique choice for the Oscars, offers an exhilarating experience. It’s a tale crafted, intended, and brought to life by women, with a focus on older women. Moreover, it embodies the essence of body horror. Interestingly, the Academy has rarely recognized horror films with its top honor, with Silence of the Lambs being the sole exception (with the possible addition of Parasite, which leans more towards a thriller).

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my awe at the extraordinary reception of “The Substance.” It seemed as though another year might pass without recognizing exceptional female performances, but boy, was I wrong! The moment Demi Moore graced the stage to accept her Golden Globe for her outstanding portrayal marked a significant shift. This was her first win in her illustrious career, a triumph that silenced any lingering doubts about stellar female performances being overlooked.

Now, Coralie Fargeat’s ingeniously dark comedy, “The Split,” which explores the concept of duality by dividing characters into younger and older versions, has truly made a splash! This masterpiece has garnered an impressive five Oscar nominations, including nods for Moore and Fargeat. In fact, Fargeat is the only female director nominated this year.

Not only is it a popular choice, but it’s also an impressive accomplishment with a rich history behind it. After decades in development, “Wicked” has become one of the highest-earning stage musicals ever produced.

The musical movie “Wicked”, which shares its name with the book, narrates the beginnings of an extraordinary friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
