As a seasoned researcher hailing from the sunshine state of Florida, I must say that the tale of “Jeepers Creepers” has me both fascinated and slightly creeped out! It’s always intriguing to discover the real-life stories that inspire such chilling films. The true story behind this horror classic took place in Michigan, not too far from where my beloved Miami Heat reign supreme on the basketball court.
For over two decades now, the chilling horror movie “Jeepers Creepers” has left an indelible mark on us. The terrifying character known as the Creeper, portrayed by Jonathan Breck in the original trilogy, continues to stalk our nightmares. With his menacing appearance featuring horns and facial appendages reminiscent of a Predator, he is a formidable adversary. One can only hope to outlive his reign of terror as the mere act of defeating him is elusive. And even if you manage to elude his demonic grip, he threatens to return with a fury that will haunt us again.
But even if the horror flick gave you nightmares, it’s nothing compared to some of the behind-the-scenes events that contributed to making “Jeepers Creepers,” or the events that inspired it. If you ever wondered where this cult-classic horror story was filmed (or if any of the locations were particularly haunted), then wonder no more. There are plenty of secrets to uncover in the fictional Poho County, some that may even chill you to the bone. Just beware of that titular tune …
What is Jeepers Creepers?
So, what is ‘Jeepers Creepers’? It’s a rather spooky movie about a terrifying creature. The story unfolds as siblings Derry (Justin Long) and Trish Jenner (Gina Philips), returning from their spring break vacation, find themselves pursued across the countryside by an ominous truck. They soon realize they are being stalked by this mysterious vehicle, which almost forces them off the road. When they pass an abandoned church, the creature’s home, it becomes aware of them and starts to chase. For the remainder of the film, the Creeper focuses its attention on the Jenners, relentlessly pursuing them until it finally catches its victims.
On their journey, the Jenners encounter helpful individuals, such as Jezelle Gay Hartman (played by Patricia Belcher), a psychic with knowledge about the menacing beast. She alerts the siblings that one of them will meet a tragic end upon hearing an old 1930s jazz song titled “Jeepers Creepers.” Although you might not recall every detail from “Jeepers Creepers,” revisiting this scene is certain to give you goosebumps.
Originally directed by Victor Salva, the initial movie gave rise to a horror series focusing on the Creeper character, with all three films set during the same week of its killing spree due to the creature’s reappearance every 23 years. This recurrence doesn’t exactly fill us with optimism. A new installment, named “Jeepers Creepers: Reborn,” was unveiled in 2022, but unfortunately, none of the original creative team were involved, leading many devoted fans to dismiss it as a mere imitation lacking authenticity.
Jeepers Creepers had some very interesting filming locations
Despite giving off a small-town Midwestern vibe, the chilling film “Jeepers Creepers” was actually filmed in central Florida, more specifically Marion and Lake Counties. The ominous church, serving as the Creeper’s hideout, stood at 3602 SW 110th Avenue in Ocala, Florida before it met with fire over a decade past. Some speculate that an irritated neighbor set the blaze, fed up with tourists asking for its location. In a 2010 Blogspot post, director Victor Salva pondered, “Who would destroy such a classic, even historical old church, which had been intertwined in the state’s history for so long?” Salva wasn’t convinced by the rumor and suspected that some malicious vandals might have been the real culprits.
Additionally, there were other tales surrounding the settings depicted in the 2001 creature movie. For instance, at the film’s start, the road where Derry and Trish are stranded is reportedly the very stretch called Tiger Trail. This eerie road, located northeast of Dunnellon, Florida, has a chilling history – it’s said that the spirits of three young children who met their tragic end on this highway may appear early in the morning, adding an extra layer of spookiness to the area.
Moreover, the Reddick Public Library in the town of Reddick and the Opper’s Diner (named after the movie’s producer Barry Opper) near Rutland were locations for the film. Interestingly, the school where the Jenners seek refuge was made up of three different spots spread throughout Dunnellon. Filming at these schools stirred up a commotion, as plans for media students to visit the set had to be abandoned when the schools discovered Salva’s past conviction as a sex offender.
The real life Jeepers Creepers took place in Michigan
Hey there! As a gamer, let me share something interesting about “Jeepers Creepers” – it was inspired by a real-life chilling event. Unlike the movie’s demonic creature, there was no such figure lurking in Florida. Instead, back in 1990, on an Easter Sunday, a brother and sister named Ray and Marie Thornton were cruising down Snow Perry Road in Coldwater, Michigan. They played a game where they made up sentences based on the license plates of cars they saw. When they spotted a “GZ” plate, Marie joked, “Geez, he must be in a hurry.” Little did they know, he was indeed in a rush – to unload a bloodied sheet, likely containing a body, near an abandoned schoolhouse they had just passed. Creeeeepy!
Worried, the Thorntons continued their journey in search of a phone, but a truck persistently followed them. Eventually, it veered off, allowing them to proceed. However, they wanted to identify the truck for the authorities, so they made a U-turn. As they passed the stationary truck later, they noticed the driver taking off his license plate and saw blood stains on the back seat. It turned out that Dennis DePue, the culprit, had murdered his ex-wife Marilynn following a heated dispute over their children. After an acrimonious divorce, the kids had no desire to be near their father, so he brutally killed Marilynn in front of them.
Dennis informed the children he was taking Marilynn to the hospital, but instead, he secretly buried her. When the Thorntons found out, Dennis went on the run and wrote letters explaining his actions. Remarkably, it took an episode of “Unsolved Mysteries” from 1991 to uncover the murderer, who had changed his identity to Hank. Following a shootout with the Michigan State Police, DePue committed suicide. He was not buried alongside his ex-wife.
