List of all filming locations where Murderbot was shot
I’ve been utterly captivated by the creation of Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz for Apple TV+, titled Murderbot, inspired by Martha Wells’ All Systems Red series. Filmed across various picturesque landscapes in Canada, this production has been an exciting journey from March 2024 to June 2024, as I’ve watched the principal photography unfold.
Toronto, Ontario
The main filming location for Murderbot was Toronto, where the production team concentrated on indoor and technologically advanced sets, utilizing the city’s sophisticated infrastructure and varied architectural styles. Scenes were also filmed in North York, specifically at the York University Subway Station situated at 120 Ian MacDonald Boulevard.
1) The unique boomerang layout and contemporary glass architecture of the station gave the series a sleek, futuristic vibe. The crew employed green screens to broaden backdrops and portray extraterrestrial landscapes. The city’s expansive sound stages and tax benefits facilitated the production’s physical set requirements. Other productions filmed in the city include Another Simple Favor, Overcompensating, and Bet.
Vancouver, British Columbia
The production team selected Vancouver as the primary backdrop, besides the main location, for the series Murderbot. They leveraged the city’s contemporary urban landscapes to amplify the science fiction atmosphere of the show. The crew primarily utilized Vancouver’s unique blend of architectural styles and practical sets to construct a futuristic environment that feels both realistic and engaging.
Apart from hosting shows such as “See”, “The Last of Us”, “Government Cheese”, and “Home Before Dark”, Vancouver is equipped with cutting-edge production facilities and provides robust post-production assistance, making it an ideal location for film and television productions.
Elora, Ontario
The film crew captured outdoor scenes in Elora, a town situated within Wellington County. One of their primary shooting spots was the Elora Quarry Conservation Area, located on Wellington Road 18.
The location, marked by a 2-acre water-filled limestone quarry and towering 40-foot cliffs, offers breathtaking natural landscapes as its backdrop. Adjacent to it are the Elora Gorge and Grand River, further enhancing the picturesque view. Notably, this site was featured in the It movie series before.
