In Leigh Whannell’s newest horror production, “Wolf Man,” currently playing in theaters nationwide (get your tickets here), the breathtaking landscapes of the Pacific Northwest transform into a gruesome battleground for survival. This Blumhouse-produced film offers a contemporary reimagining of Universal’s iconic monster, with the werewolf transformation portrayed as a progressive illness akin to Alzheimer’s or dementia, instead of a mystical curse.
Christopher Abbott, who played Blake Lovell in “Catch-22”, is the latest individual to succumb to a mysterious canine disease. His journey takes him back to an Oregon farmhouse where he spent his childhood with his wife, Charlotte (Julia Garner from “Ozark”), and daughter, Ginger (Matilda Firth from “Hullraisers”). On their way to the idyllic property once owned by his deceased father, Blake encounters an injury inflicted by an unknown creature. This sets off a grisly metamorphosis that gradually erodes the very essence of the caring spouse and parent – his human qualities.

Where was Wolf Man filmed?
Similar to how Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and Gerard Johnstone’s “M3GAN” were shot in New Zealand, standing in for various locations such as downtown San Francisco and rural Oregon’s wilderness, “Wolf Man” was also filmed there.
According to Ruby Mathers, the production designer of ‘Mr Inbetween’, the Pacific Northwest boasts a unique aesthetic. She finds the scenery of New Zealand’s South Island absolutely stunning and awe-inspiring.
According to Whannell, if you’re aiming for a scenic backdrop similar to Oregon’s mountainous terrain, you should visit New Zealand instead. He found the locations in the South Island particularly stunning, providing them with an opportunity to capture striking beauty on film.
Instead of using an existing house, the film crew constructed the Lovell farmhouse, where much of the story unfolds, from scratch since they couldn’t find any pre-existing properties that perfectly captured the old-fashioned American charm they were aiming for.
Mathers describes their fortunate discovery of a farm with a pine forest backdrop, where they constructed a house and barn. As he gazes upon the farmhouse nestled among these colossal trees, he is awestruck. In the South Island, they frequently engaged in hunting within native beach forests. Fortunately, beaches are common in the Pacific Northwest too. Regarding the design of the buildings, it was significant to Mathers, being an Australian production designer, to become knowledgeable about American farmhouse architecture. This architectural style covers several centuries. It was no easy task comprehending American rural architecture and how it has transformed over time.
According to Whannell, the outcome surpassed the director’s most “unexpected dreams.” He expressed that exploring the set and the farmhouse was delightful, as there were surprises hidden at every turn, and each detail seemed to have been meticulously layered multiple times. One day, while wandering on set, he noticed small etchings on the walls, indicating Blake’s height as a child. He also discovered piles of papers containing bills addressed to the Lovells. There was a rich history that could be felt throughout the setting.
