White Cube to Present Park Seo-Bo's Final 'Écriture' Artworks in New York

As a seasoned gamer of life with a penchant for art that resonates deeply, I eagerly anticipate the unveiling of Park Seo-Bo’s final series, “The Newspaper Écritures, 2022–23.” The fusion of global news and personal milestones intrigues me, as it encapsulates the poignant interplay between the universal and the intimate.

White Cube New York will exhibit the last body of work produced by the late Korean artist Park Seo-Bo before his death in 2023. This series, titled “The Newspaper Écritures, 2022–23“, represents Park’s final artistic explorations. In these pieces, he applied repeated brushstrokes with oil paint directly onto various newspapers, each one chosen to symbolize significant dates from his personal life – anniversaries of marriages and birthdays of family members, as well as major events that he marked on the back of the canvas.

The “Écriture” series by Park dates back to the 1960s, with the artist blending Korean calligraphy and philosophical concepts inherent in Taoism and Buddhism. This repeated mark-making lacks a specific storyline but mirrors the artist’s mental state at the time, as “Écriture” means “writing” in French. As Perrotin expressed upon the artist’s demise, Park Seo-Bo viewed painting and the repetitive motion that produced his monochromes as a form of release, much like how Korean scholars and Buddhist monks perceived writing as a purifying practice.

Pharrell Williams joined forces with Jifan Park, the grandson of artist Park, and the PARKSEOBO FOUNDATION, taking inspiration from Park’s work, to collaborate on a limited collection of leather goods and clothing items for Louis Vuitton.

2022-2023’s exhibition titled “The Newspaper Écritures” is set to feature a collection of 52 contemplative artworks. This display will be unveiled in New York from November 7, 2024, to January 11, 2025.
