This year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner will go forward without a featured entertainer.
On Saturday, Eugene Daniels, head of the White House Correspondents’ Association, informed members that they had chosen to scrap comedian Amber Ruffin’s planned act for this year’s gala, scheduled for April 26th.
Or simply:
Eugene Daniels, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, announced on Saturday that they had decided not to have Amber Ruffin perform at this year’s gala, which takes place on April 26th.
In this crucial time for journalism, it’s important that we shift attention away from divisive politics and instead celebrate our colleagues for their exceptional work, offer scholarships, and provide guidance to the upcoming journalists,” Daniels penned to WHCA members in a note.
The White House team has voiced disapproval regarding the choice of Ruffin as the performer, implying that it might be wise for organizations to reconsider their participation in the event. However, Daniels stated that the decision made by the WHCA board was consensus-based and had been planned for several weeks as part of a new approach to this year’s tradition.
As the time approaches, I’ll reveal additional information about our arrangements aimed at celebrating journalistic achievement and maintaining a strong, autonomous press that covers the most influential position globally,” he stated.
The White House and the Washington Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) are in disagreement on several matters, such as the WHCA’s policy of preventing the Associated Press from covering specific news gatherings, and the White House’s attempt to seize management of the White House press corps directly.
Each year, the WHCA annual dinner functions as both a significant fundraising event for our organization and a way to award scholarships to worthy students. Historically, it has also been a platform for witty political commentary from our guest entertainers. Notable figures on this list include Bob Hope, Ed Sullivan, Jay Leno, Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert, among others. In 2024, Colin Jost was the host.
