The White House is criticizing the political left following Wednesday night’s debatable premiere of the 27th season of South Park, during which a cartoon character portraying Donald Trump had Satan as a lover and ended with a deepfake depicting the president with an image of his exposed genitals.
For over two decades, the animated series known for sparking controversy has taken delight in mocking political figures from left to right, as well as celebrities, politicians, tech CEOs, and anyone else its writers consider suitable targets for its unique style of satire. Last night, Donald Trump, a figure that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone had previously avoided portraying, finally appeared on South Park.
The president was portrayed much like South Park’s representation of Saddam Hussein in their 1999 movie, “South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut”: he was depicted as ill-tempered, cunning, and cruel. The depiction of Trump included a full frontal nudity scene where his small penis was prominently shown while he was lying in bed with Satan. This was arguably outdone by the climactic fake public service announcement, where an artificially intelligent version of Trump appeared walking through the desert, his penis becoming visible and speaking to him.
On Thursdays, Taylor Rogers, an assistant press secretary at the White House, responded to the recent incident, implying that it exemplifies the hypocrisy of the political left, firing back at the Comedy Central program and emphasizing President Trump’s fulfillment of his pledges.
Rogers commented to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘The Left’s hypocrisy is boundless – for years they have criticized South Park as offensive, but now they are singing its praises.’ He added, ‘Much like the creators of South Park, the Left lacks genuine or innovative content, which is why their popularity is dwindling. This show hasn’t been significant for over two decades and clings to existence with stale ideas in a bid for relevance. In contrast, President Trump has fulfilled more promises in six months than any other president in our nation’s history, and no subpar show can disrupt President Trump’s impressive momentum.’
For Wednesday night’s 27th season premiere ratings, we don’t have figures yet, but based on Nielsen’s April 2023 ratings, South Park’s 26th season on HBO Max was the most-watched adult animated series that month, clocking in at a total of 700 million minutes viewed.
In the 2016 election, Stone and Parker struggled with deciding the right approach to feature Trump on their show or satirize him given his unpredictable path to the presidency. As an alternative, they chose to represent Trump using the character of Mr. Garrison from their show as a stand-in.
The controversial episode of the satirical series “South Park” surfaces at a time when Paramount is on the verge of being acquired by Skydance Media, a deal that requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). In a statement made on Thursday, Brendan Carr, the FCC chair appointed by Trump, expressed that he doesn’t watch “South Park,” but shared Trump’s viewpoint that a small group of national broadcasters should not have the power to dictate the nation’s perspective, control what can be said, or influence people’s thoughts.
Significantly, Skydance Media is helmed by David Ellison, a man known as the son of tech tycoon Larry Ellison, a well-known associate of former President Donald Trump.
