- Sky prints, technical knits and sculptural influences elevate functionality into wearable art
- Shifting from vibrant to muted tones, the collection embraces both high fashion and practicality
At the Paris Fashion Week, White Mountaineering presented their Spring/Summer 2026 collection titled “Evolution Theory.” This collection was creatively directed by Yosuke Aizawa, who skillfully combined retro inspirations with advanced technology. The show traced the transformation of outdoor equipment, from its practical origins to its modern high-end fashion manifestation.
Aizawa refers to this collection as an homage to his father, blending memories of old-fashioned outdoor equipment with contemporary flair. The presentation began with vibrant color schemes reminiscent of the past, featuring eye-catching shades such as shocking pink, bold oranges, and deep purples alongside subdued, vintage tones. Each ensemble was accessorized with backpacks resembling scaffolding structures, which complemented the outfits while evoking a sense of nostalgia. Checkered patterns and detailed designs were combined with vivid colors, resulting in striking pieces that offered a unique twist on conventional outdoor clothing.
In this modern take, traditional nostalgic elements are given a fresh twist using innovative materials like polyester mesh and technical knits. The style stays true to high fashion, yet maintains practicality by offering a variety of garments – from structured forms to airy, breathable pieces ideal for real-life outdoor activities.
Apart from his own creative ideas, Aizawa acknowledged being inspired by artists such as James Turrell and Richard Serra, who are renowned for their large-scale pieces that interact with the elements of light and space in nature. This inspiration is reflected in Aizawa’s designs through the use of shirts and shorts printed with images of the sky, as well as earthy-toned knitwear, seamlessly blending natural artistry with high fashion design.
Towards the end of the show, the color palette transitioned from bright hues to darker shades of black and earthy tones, adopting a ‘gorp-core’ style with lightweight jackets, large shirts, and airy shapes. In summary, the SS26 display represents one of White Mountaineering’s broadest and most daring collections yet – suggesting a fresh and potentially more vibrant direction for the brand in the future.
