As a long-time Marvel fan with over two decades of comic book history under my belt, I can confidently say that the “Thunderbolts” trailer has me more excited than a cat on a hot tin roof! The introduction of Bob (Lewis Pullman) to the MCU is not just an addition to the team but a potential game-changer for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The “Thunderbolts*” have finally made their cinematic debut in a brand new trailer that pits this not-so-squeaky-clean ensemble at each others’ throats for reasons that have yet to be revealed. Most of the Marvel misfits that are dropping in and doing damage in the brand new preview are ones we’re already familiar with, but in between Florence Pugh’s Yelena dodging knives and Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent chucking his shield around, there’s one unknown that at a glance appears to be the least threatening of them all. That, friends, is Bob (Lewis Pullman), and it might be surprising to know that he may very well be the most terrifying character in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As I stand here, you might not guess it, but I’m none other than Bob – the soon-to-be-unveiled Sentry, one of Marvel’s mightiest heroes. The whispers about my role in this movie have been circulating ever since Steven Yeun was initially cast, only for him to depart due to scheduling conflicts, paving the way for me to step into the limelight. Making my debut in the comics back in 2000, I was such a formidable force that the very knowledge of my power was systematically erased as a safety measure, even leaving my former Avengers teammates clueless about my existence.
However, one might wonder about the potential dangers that could stem from someone as seemingly harmless as Bob. Could his presence in “Thunderbolts*” possibly stir up turmoil not only for the emerging team but potentially tear apart the entire universe in the process?
The Thunderbolts Trailer‘s Bob Is Actually Marvel Most Powerful Superhero
In a universe as rich as the MCU, some characters may already possess extraordinary powers. However, The Sentry’s arrival might not just even things out; it could potentially obliterate the balance instead. Originally created by Paul Jenkins, Jae Lee, and Rick Veitch, Robert Reynolds was once a drug addict who transformed into a superhero. He harnessed a power equivalent to a million exploding suns. In his quest for his next high, Reynolds infiltrated a lab where scientists were experimenting with a serum similar to Captain America’s super soldier serum. After discovering the serum, he consumed it and metamorphosed into a divine being.
The serum granted Reynolds abilities similar to Superman, such as enhanced strength, speed, and toughness. These powers were tested at Project Sentry. This might be why Bob appears in a lab coat and seems confused in the trailer. It’s possible that he could be an unauthorized experiment that the Thunderbolts discover and eventually release. If this is true, it wouldn’t just be the Sentry who becomes uncontrolled if his complex background is included in the MCU. In a universe filled with secret identities and closely watched characters due to their potential for anger, Bob’s hero character has a dark side that even the Hulk can’t control – the Sentry’s main adversary, the Void.
The Void Is The Sentry’s Enemy Within and Is Terrifying to Marvel Fans
How does one tackle a villain as formidable as The Void? Contrary to the void encountered by Logan and Deadpool Wilson in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” this entity made its Earth debut much earlier, around 1600 BCE. To humans, it was known as the Angel of Death, the harbinger of God’s last plague that struck the Egyptians.
In time spanning millennia, the enigmatic entity known as the Void discovered a mirror in Bob Reynolds and his alter ego. This sinister force manipulated the hero’s powers, seizing control of his body to commit heinous acts worldwide, ultimately resulting in the annihilation of over a million innocent lives in Manhattan. Essentially, if unleashed, the Void would rank among the MCU’s most horrific forces. In the comic books, Bob turned to Doctor Strange and Reed Richards for aid, aiming to halt the Void’s destructive actions. Eventually, they erased everyone’s memory of the Sentry, breaking the Void’s grip on him and diminishing its threat.
In simpler terms, “Thunderbolts” seems to be one of the more realistic Marvel movies lately. But it might surprise us in the end by introducing a destructive force called the Void. This could potentially cause damage that no hero can handle on their own. A more pressing question is how the Sentry will factor into this story, and what his role might mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) moving forward.
The Thunderbolts, Bob and The Sentry Could Change the MCU Forever
From the brief sneak peek of the trailer, it is clear that Bob will interact with Sentry, though it remains uncertain whether this encounter happens before or after the Thunderbolts assemble to confront their potentially most formidable member. If they cross paths, insights from other pivotal chapters in Bob’s Marvel Comics journey could shed light on what lies ahead for him and the newly-formed Thunderbolts. They might even take over as Marvel’s famous super team, but with a darker twist to their operations.
The intriguing asterisk that adorns the Thunderbolts’ name hints at potential modifications for this unofficial group in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s worth mentioning that in the comics, the Sentry, who joined the New Avengers in “New Avengers” #10, was closely monitored by Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. Later, Norman Osborn formed a team of Dark Avengers, including villains disguised as heroes – and the Sentry. Could these key moments in the Sentry’s life repeat themselves in the MCU, with the Thunderbolts serving as a possible adaptation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?
