Who Should Play Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho?

As a huge fan of both the book and the original film adaptation of “American Psycho,” I must say that the castings suggested here are nothing short of intriguing!

With director Luca Guadagnino preparing to bring his unique take on “American Psycho” to life, many are curious about how this adaptation might unfold. The original “American Psycho” stands as a classic, boasting an exceptional portrayal by Christian Bale. Filling such esteemed footsteps is no small task, and while specifics about the upcoming project are sparse, it’s known that the remake will hew closer to Bret Easton Ellis’ novel, leaving much still unclear. The burning question on everyone’s mind: who will portray Patrick Bateman?; here are our top six candidates for the role.

Jacob Elordi

Known for The Kissing Booth, Euphoria, Priscilla, Saltburn

It appears that Jacob Elordi, who gained fame from his role in HBO’s Euphoria, is being strongly considered for the part of Patrick Bateman. At 27 years old, he has had a successful career, with standout roles in the 2023 films Saltburn and Priscilla. The latter was directed by Sofia Coppola and co-starred Cailee Spaeny. Recently, Elordi collaborated with Guadagnino on a Chanel No. 5 ad campaign, which shares a similar aesthetic to Christian Bale’s portrayal of Bateman.

Aaron Pierre

Known for The Underground Railroad, Brother, Genius, Rebel Ridge

2024 finds Aaron Pierre making waves as an emerging star, following his outstanding portrayal in Netflix’s “Rebel Ridge.” With his striking presence and charisma, Pierre is well-suited to embody the aristocratic aspect of Patrick Bateman in a potential “American Psycho” remake. His ability to convey both an intimidating persona and the dark comedic elements essential for such a role make him an ideal candidate. As he prepares to play John Stewart in “Lanterns,” “American Psycho” could serve as an intriguing contrast, presenting Pierre with another compelling project to take on.

Dacre Montgomery

Known for Stranger Things, Elvis, Went Up the Hill

Australian performer Dacre Montgomery has amassed a devoted fanbase eager for him to delve into more intricate roles. The film American Psycho could be an ideal choice for such a challenge. Although he’s most recognized from his role in Stranger Things, his latest work in Went Up the Hill demonstrates his ability to portray characters with profound psychological complexity. Certainly, his attractive charm would suit him well in playing the image-fixated Bateman.

LaKeith Stanfield

Known for Sorry to Bother You, Knives Out, Selma

To play Patrick Bateman convincingly requires a great deal of adaptability, and few actors have demonstrated their versatility as impressively as LaKeith Stanfield. Stanfield has shown a talent for navigating diverse genres, from the dramatic depths of Judas and the Black Messiah to the offbeat humor of Sorry to Bother You. Given his versatility, we believe that Stanfield would be more than capable of taking on the range required for Bateman. Currently, he is involved in several pre-production projects, and if circumstances permit, he would make an excellent choice for the role in American Psycho.

Bill Skarsgård

Known for It, Barbarian, John Wick: Chapter 4

Bill Skarsgård’s talent for portraying sinister characters is exceptional and could make him an ideal fit for the role of Patrick Bateman, following Robert Eggers’ anticipated version of Nosferatu where he plays Count Orlok. Skarsgård has demonstrated his versatility in playing diverse monsters, and it seems that he can effortlessly balance the complex mix of darkness and materialism that defines Bateman. Additionally, Skarsgård brings a touch of melancholy to his characters, as evidenced by his performance as Marquis de Gramont in John Wick: Chapter 4.

Mackenzie Davis

Known for Terminator: Dark Fate, Black Mirror, Blade Runner: 2049

If the new American Psycho is closer to the book than the original film, it would be hard to imagine that they would not go with a man in the lead role. However, if they change it up and go with a woman in the lead, we would want it to be Mackenzie Davis. Davis pulled off an intimidating figure, Grace, in Terminator: Dark Fate, which we can see her carrying into American Psycho. However, her underrated performance in the phenomenal psychological thriller Always Shine shows the actor is ideally suited to handle that complex mix of vanity and cruelty that Patrick Batmen is capable of.
