Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Marvel’s Thunderbolts*
Marvel’s new team, the Thunderbolts, has introduced Bob, also known as The Sentry, one of the mightiest characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Yet, it’s important to note that the Mad Titan, Thanos, is another formidable figure in the MCU, and even in Marvel Comics. Given this, some fans might ponder which of these two Marvel heroes exhibits greater power on screen.
In the comic book series “Thunderbolts,” character Bob Reynolds transforms into the formidable Sentry, thanks to the efforts of CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and the OXE Group. Eager to assemble their own team of Earth’s mightiest heroes, the Sentry is unquestionably one of the most powerful entities ever introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (despite his significant dark aspect, the Void).
Now, let me propose a hypothetical scenario: Who would prevail in a battle between The Sentry and Thanos within the MCU?
This contest could be incredibly close.
MCU Sentry’s Powers Explained
Some Key Differences From The Comics
Lewis Pullman portrays the character known as Bob or Sentry, who boasts incredible superpowers including super-strength, flight, toughness, enhanced speed, endurance, and agility. He also has an exceptional regenerative capacity, as demonstrated when Bob quickly recovered after Val activated a kill switch due to The Void’s influence. Moreover, Bob exhibits psychic abilities, such as telekinesis, the power to read minds through touch, and even the ability to manipulate matter. However, when consumed by The Void, Bob can summon a darkness that envelops his targets, transporting them into a horrifying dreamscape populated by their deepest regrets and past torments.
It’s important to mention that the comic book character Sentry, who serves as the basis for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version, possesses significantly greater strength. In the comics, there is no known limit to The Sentry’s power; he has the ability to manipulate energy on a cosmic scale, often referred to as wielding “the power of a million exploding suns.” This is in contrast to the MCU portrayal where this phrase is merely a marketing slogan from the OXE Group and his powers are depicted as being only “a thousand suns” strong.
From my perspective as a film enthusiast, the comic book version of Sentry, unlike his Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart, boasts an array of extraordinary abilities that have yet to be fully explored on screen. These include biokinesis, self-resurrection, teleportation, and the sharing of powers with others – all qualities that could potentially render him immortal. However, it is uncertain whether these powers are inherent to the MCU’s Sentry or if they will be unveiled in future installments.
As for The Void, also known as Bob, his unique power lies in producing dark tentacles. When unfortunate souls become ensnared by them, they are subjected to harrowing visions of their past, present, and future – a power dynamic that forms the foundation for The Void’s abilities in the MCU.
MCU Thanos’ Powers Explained
With And Without The Infinity Stones
In the Marvel Comics Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos possesses a power and strength that is nearly unmatched. This immortal being showcases extraordinary strength and durability, as demonstrated when he fought and overpowered the Hulk in the film “Avengers: Infinity War,” a feat that was also accomplished by the Sentry character in the comics.
Instead of just having brute strength as seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Comic Thanos possesses the ability to generate cosmic energy for various purposes, such as shooting energy blasts. This could potentially be used to account for why Thanos’ eyes glowed purple in his initial MCU appearances compared to his later appearances in “Infinity War” and “Endgame.”
Additionally, Thanos in the comics is one of the few beings strong enough to control all six Infinity Stones. With these stones, he gains near-omnipotent power over all life in the universe, as well as individual control over time, reality, space, mind, power, and the soul.
Sentry Is More Powerful In The MCU
Assuming Thanos Doesn’t Have The Infinity Stones
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it seems plausible that Sentry would emerge victorious against Thanos due to his immense power, which can be likened to having all the abilities of the Avengers combined within a single entity. While he may not be as powerful in the films as his comic book version, if The Void is involved, his chances of winning significantly increase.
Darkened Bob has the power to imprison Thanos, the Mad Titan, in the Void’s dark dimension. This is probably something Thanos wouldn’t be able to escape from easily. However, when it comes to Thanos using the Infinity Stones, the story changes drastically, and it’s possible that Bob might not stand a chance against him. In this discussion focused on a direct battle of powers, let’s exclude the Infinity Gauntlet as a factor.
