Whoopi Questions Why The View Keeps Being Tasked With Reading Legal Notes From Donald Trump's Team. Turns Out He's Declined The Show Several Times

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the labyrinthine world of political discourse through various mediums, I must say that watching the latest exchange between Whoopi Goldberg and Brian Teta on The View was as intriguing as completing a high-difficulty quest in a role-playing game.

It’s no secret that many people with TVs have noticed: The Presidential election of 2024 and the lead-up to it are dominating a significant portion of the Fall television schedule, ranging from cable news broadcasts to debates airing across multiple prime-time slots. Additionally, political discussions are common on daytime talk show The View, where the hosts recently criticized Diddy for stockpiling lubricants and expressed their views about Anna Delvey appearing on Dancing with the Stars.

At times, discussions about the competition between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump arise, particularly when an all-female panel delves into the controversy surrounding the 2020 election. Whenever they do, they are obligated to read out a legal statement from Trump’s team that claims he “refutes any allegations of wrongdoing related to the 2020 election.” As the October 2 episode was concluding, someone off-camera signaled for Hostin to recite this specific statement.

That moment sparked moderator Whoopi Goldberg to temporarily delay the impending commercial break by questioning the sporadically seen executive producer Brian Teta about the practice. Here’s how that exchange went down:

  • WHOOPI GOLDBERG: I find that so interesting. We have to do these legal notes each time to say what has been proven to be a fact. We have to deny it on their behalf. Is that right?
  • BRIAN TETA: We have to state the denials that they’ve stated.
  • WHOOPI GOLDBERG: One day you’ll tell me why. I think I’ve told you a couple of times but we can talk about it again. I find it odd when everybody has seen it, and they know that it’s not necessarily the truth.
  • BRIAN TETA: We’re showing what [Trump’s team] has said on the record.
  • ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: We can do it off-air, guys.

During the commercial break, it seems there might not have been any discussion at all for those watching at home. Those who were present during taping may know something, but viewers shouldn’t expect to find hints about this topic in the episode of The View uploaded on YouTube because that part of the conversation was cut out.

The Times Donald Trump Apparently Turned Down Appearing On The View

In April, when Brian Teta extended his contract as executive producer of The View, he discussed with Deadline about the strategies for choosing guests during political campaigns and how they avoid potential disputes. During this conversation, he acknowledged that Donald Trump and his son have appeared on the show previously.

The show doesn’t restrict any topics, making it quite fascinating. However, we evaluate each potential guest separately. For instance, during the Trump administration, both Don Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle appeared on our program. We’ve hosted a variety of individuals. Before he was president, Donald Trump himself was a frequent guest on our show. In fact, he joined us for a phone interview during his first election campaign in 2015.

When someone asked if Trump could appear on “The View” again before the next election, Teta suggested it might not happen due to his past declines.

For both the 2016 and 2020 elections, we extended invitations to Trump to join us at our table, but he chose not to accept. At some point, we ceased extending those invitations to him. Given his understanding of how we co-hosts feel towards him, I don’t expect this situation to change. I believe he feels no inclination to visit here.

Back in the day when Barbara Walters was the moderator, The View was quite distinct from how it is now. It’s hard to say if they would have invited Donald Trump as a political candidate during that time, even though the reasons might have differed.

Starting soon, you can catch popular guests like LeVar Burton and Nathan Lane on “The View” each weekday morning on ABC at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Previous episodes are also accessible for streaming if you have a Hulu subscription.
