It’s possible for the “Star Wars” stories to be compelling without including characters from the royal family. Although it would have been enjoyable to see a main character appear briefly, showrunner Tony Gilroy stated that this is no longer realistic. He had originally intended to (momentarily) include Princess Leia in Season 2 and even presented his story concept to Lucasfilm executives.
In an alternate scenario, the showrunner Tony Gilroy attempted to include a scene showing the initial encounter between Mon Mothma and Princess Leia. This was planned during the Investiture party, a significant event in Episode 6 titled “What a Festive Evening.” Bail Organa made a brief appearance in one such scene to engage in friendly dialogue with both Mon Mothma and Perrin Fertha. During this interaction, Leia would have been accompanied by her adopted father, Bail Organa, while Mon Mothma would have urged Leia to consider a future in politics.
Reflecting back, I remember there were some intriguing discussions right from the start about an idea I was eagerly pursuing – Investiture Week. I wanted to maximize its potential and the excitement of those parties associated with it. Now, we’re taking that concept and shaping it into something more substantial. Additionally, we were trying to pinpoint Leia’s timeline in the Senate during this phase of planning.
Andor Almost Depicted A Crucial Arc In Princess Leia’s Storyline
Leia’s journey into politics began when she was just 14 years old, working under Bail Organa as a junior legislator in the Imperial Senate. Four years later, at the age of 18, she was elected as Alderaan’s representative, succeeding Bail and becoming the youngest member ever to join the Senate. This four-year period in Leia’s life was an important part of her story that Gilroy wanted to explore more deeply, revealing how her political aspirations were shaped during this time. The intended cameo in Andor would have hinted at her future role as a diplomat and also suggested the origins of their shared destiny as allies in the Rebel Alliance.
In Gilroy’s words, “There were some potential elements for a scene involving her and Mothma, had she been there at 16 and Mothma been in the Senate then. However, these ideas never progressed beyond that stage, they didn’t reach casting, and they never became more than just ideas.” Gilroy recalled discussing this cameo with Kathy [Kennedy] and Pablo [Hidalgo], but it ultimately didn’t gain momentum and instead turned out to be a diversion. Gilroy later affirmed that not pursuing the scrapped cameo proved beneficial for the show in hindsight.
Spectators welcomed the show “Andor” warmly, even though it didn’t feature prominent characters from the main Star Wars series. Although it serves as a prequel to “Rogue One” and “A New Hope“, its storyline establishes a unique narrative voice separate from the big-screen universe. A brief appearance by Princess Leia necessitated a new actress portraying the character, which could have stirred up debate about continuity.
Andor Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Disney+.
