Contains spoilers for the One Chicago crossover event, “In The Trenches” Parts 1, 2 and 3
In the thrilling three-part “One Chicago” 2025 franchise event, I found myself captivated by a fresh character – Lauren Bates (Jennifer Regan), an old friend of Trudy Platt (Amy Morton). They both rose through the ranks in the police force together. Lately, Bates has been working in private security, most recently at the government building where a lethal explosion happened under suspicious circumstances. Throughout the entire crossover, she comes across as tough and abrasive, and it’s later revealed that her past is tied to the building’s true purpose, which could potentially be her undoing too.
Jennifer Regan, over the years since her debut in acting in 1997, has accumulated numerous guest roles across various genres, including dramas, comedies, and even parody soap operas. Her versatility has been evident as she’s shown herself to be adept at different acting styles, culminating in her becoming a proficient voiceover artist, demonstrating that she truly is a multi-talented performer.
Jennifer Regan got a TV foothold in The Heart, She Holler
Jennifer Regan’s significant acting debut was in the unconventional Adult Swim soap opera spoof titled “The Heart, She Holler.” This hillbilly and horror-inspired parody of soap operas, featuring Patton Oswalt (previously known for his role on “Seinfeld”), ran for three seasons, becoming one of the network’s most popular live-action shows. In this series, Regan portrayed Direne, the wife of Jacket, played by David Cross. Similar to her husband, Direne is a proud Southern redneck and assists Jacket in managing their combined bar and convenience store.
Initially portrayed as a kind and unassuming barmaid and cashier, Direne gradually spirals into a more corrupt state, mirroring the decline of her husband and the twisted Heartshe family who rule their holler. Given it’s an Adult Swim production, be prepared for some heads to roll. In episode 7 of season 3, Hambrosia (played by Heather Lawless) terminates Direne in a grisly manner using her psychic powers, but Regan’s acting career didn’t end there; she went on to appear in various other projects.
Regan showed a penchant for comedy and drama
Jennifer Regan has frequently been a recurring character and guest star in various dramas and sitcoms throughout her career. For instance, she played Amber for three episodes on “As The World Turns,” and also appeared as Ellen Lowry on “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.” In the first season of “Elementary,” she portrayed Agent Claudia Camden, and she featured in four episodes of “Neon Joe: Werewolf Hunter” on Adult Swim as Susan Duane. Additionally, she has taken on three distinct roles on “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit,” playing both a criminal and a witness at different times.
Reagan has taken on various voice acting jobs, one of which is an unnamed character in the podcast series “Marvel Wastelanders: Old Man Star Lord.” Her debut role in Hollywood was providing additional voices for “We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story.” This demonstrates that she hasn’t strayed too far from her beginnings, as her live-action roles have given her the opportunity to explore further.
