Previously, there was little news about the upcoming Marvel films beyond those scheduled for release this summer. However, this week, Marvel Studios confirmed that “Avengers: Doomsday” is currently being produced, with a five-hour live stream revealing its cast. Just like many fans, the announcements have me buzzing with anticipation at the prospect of seeing characters such as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki return to action. Additionally, the inclusion of teams like the Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and X-Men has me even more thrilled. Yet, some notable absences from the cast list stood out as well.
Let’s discuss another point regarding the Avengers team, specifically focusing on the noticeable absence of certain heroes in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday.” While Tom Holland is busy filming “The Odyssey” with Christopher Nolan, I want to delve into my thoughts about why several other key characters are missing from the cast.
I Noticed Captain Marvel, And A Bunch Of Other Key Heroes Are Not In The Avengers: Doomsday Announcement
Although it seemed strange for Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and several other major characters like Nick Fury, Rhodey, Hulk, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Eternals, and possibly Spider-Man to be omitted from the upcoming Avengers movie, given that a new Spiderman film is scheduled for release only a few months prior in 2026, I found it particularly puzzling that Captain Marvel was left out. The absence of so many key players seems unusual for an Avengers film. Here’s the confirmed cast list:

Initially, I found myself double-checking the cast list and noticed an intriguing similarity – ‘Doomsday’ has 27 actors, identical to the number of main characters featured in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. However, considering how busy the roster is currently for ‘Doomsday’, it seems overly crowded if all these stars appeared in a single movie right now. This observation sparks my theory…

I Think The Answer As To Why Could Connect Directly With The Marvels End Credits Scene
It seems that I understand you’re describing a storyline.
In my opinion, the story will commence with a cataclysmic event called “Doomsday” involving multiple universes. Then, approximately a year later, in the movie titled “Avengers: Secret Wars,” more heroes from the original universe are expected to appear.
Apart from the logistics issue concerning numerous characters in Doomsday, which I’ll discuss further on, it seems to me that the incorporation of the X-Men, as first seen in The Marvels, is the most significant indication of why Captain Marvel and others are prepared to delay their actions. To refresh your memory, during the closing credits of The Marvels, Monica Rambeau discovers she’s in an alternate universe when she encounters a version of her deceased mother, Maria Rambeau, followed by recognizing Kelsey Grammer’s Beast as her caretaker.
In this scenario, Beast casually mentions Professor X during the scene, hinting at Rambeau’s existence in a universe where an established X-Men team, much like the one portrayed in the initial films, exists. Suppose the X-Men are currently engaged in a mission aimed at thwarting RDJ’s Doctor Doom, and Monica manages to alert them about another universe filled with additional heroes she just stumbled upon. She then tries to connect with this newfound group, which includes Captain Marvel, to help them. The entire movie could be spent on Monica making contact with Captain Marvel and the X-Men, and establishing communication is how the storyline of “Doomsday” will conclude, potentially in a desperate situation.
In “Avengers: Doomsday”, it has been confirmed that Beast will appear alongside various X-Men, such as Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, and James Marsden’s Cyclops. Additionally, the Fantastic Four from the MCU are said to hail from another universe, as is Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Given these characters, it seems that the plot of “Doomsday” may only focus on half the story if all Avengers were to gather there.

Doctor Doom Must Be Targeting Multiple Worlds, And There’s More To Assemble
Given that Avengers: Infinity War delivered one of the greatest cliffhangers in movie history, it seems likely that Marvel Studios will aim to keep us guessing with a finale that may find half of the heroes in peril and more who have yet to unite necessary to vanquish Doctor Doom. As for a potential secondary leader aside from Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, my bet is on Captain Marvel! Furthermore, I envision Doctor Strange playing a key role in the second act, while the life-saving backup team could utilize America Chavez – her ability to traverse dimensions could prove instrumental.
Pondering over here, I can’t help but wonder how the Thunderbolts, led by Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, will integrate into the main storyline of “Doomsday”? Given that the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie might shed some light on this, for now, we can only speculate. However, from the end credits of “Captain America: Brave New World,” it’s clear that our Cap is no longer the lone hero he once was, hinting at multiverse discussions already underway.
As a die-hard fan, I can imagine Danny Ramirez’s Falcon leading his Thunderbolts team – alongside Ant-Man, Black Panther, Shang-Chi, and even Loki – embarking on their missions across our universe first. However, it seems they reside in a separate cosmos from the X-Men. It’s Captain Marvel who might unite all Avengers eventually, bridging the gap between these realms.

And, Avengers: Doomsday Waiting On Key Cast Members Makes Me More Excited For The Next Two Avengers Movies
It’s quite possible that I could be mistaken, or perhaps Marvel chose to reveal some cast members early to stir up speculation. Nonetheless, the prospect of additional heroes being reserved for Avengers: Doomsday really piques my interest. This is due to my concern about future Avengers films being overcrowded with cameos and action scenes at the expense of character development and a return to the classic feel of Marvel storytelling in the MCU.
In my opinion, it’s great that the newer characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are being integrated with established ones, similar to how the X-Men are mixed with the Doomsday cast. However, I worry that if the script isn’t handled carefully and the Avengers team becomes too large, it may not resonate as strongly with viewers.
For instance, I believe Marvel should focus on developing Shang-Chi’s journey to becoming an Avenger and his teamwork experience. Similarly, I’d like to see a significant comeback for the X-Men that leaves an impact. Overcrowding the storyline by including every Avenger from the get-go might hinder this development.
Currently, Robert Downey Jr.’s recent tease has left us puzzled about Marvel Studios’ future plans. However, knowing the star-studded cast of Avengers: Doomsday, instead of being completely clueless, piques my curiosity more. Although I anticipate that characters like Captain Marvel will eventually be involved, it’s the intrigue surrounding how all these heroes will unite that has me hooked.
