Why Carrie Preston’s Performance in The Good Wife Will Leave You Speechless!

I’ve been watching “The Good Wife” cinematic universe shows in a non-chronological order. I began with the “Elsbeth” episode and then jumped straight into the series from 2009 that started it all. As a result, my perspective of this world, particularly Elsbeth Tascioni’s character, may be slightly askew. Nevertheless, this unconventional approach has made binge-watching the show that introduced Carrie Preston’s character even more enjoyable.

Currently, I find myself immersed in these cherished CBS series through my Paramount+ membership. As I delve deeper, it’s becoming increasingly clear that my affection for them – and Elsbeth’s significant role within them – is largely due to Preston’s exceptional portrayal of the lawyer-turned-detective over the past 15 years.

Elsbeth’s Personality And Unique Ways Of Problem-Solving Have Stayed The Same Since Day One

For someone new to the series Elsbeth, it came as a surprise to discover that Preston doesn’t have a significant role in the main show, The Good Wife. In fact, Elsbeth appears in 14 episodes of the original and another 5 in its spinoff, The Good Fight. Nevertheless, it makes sense why they created a standalone series for Carrie Preston, as her limited appearances are captivating, engaging, and well-rounded.

In the show, Elsbeth’s Showrunner aimed to delve into the more complex aspects of Carrie Preston’s character, and I believe she handled it exceptionally well.

In “The Good Wife,” the character Elsbeth makes her debut during Season 1, Episode 20. She’s only present for a brief time but plays a crucial role in helping Peter after his parole violation. Her character was immediately distinctive due to her tendency to ask numerous questions about Alicia’s apartment and her assertive problem-solving style, traits that closely resemble the Elsbeth we come to know later on.

In the 22nd episode of Season 1, we got a glimpse into Elsbeth’s peculiar habits, such as her frequent bewilderment with the technology her son gifts her and her predilection for carrying multiple oversized handbags.

All these things are pillars of what makes her, her, and they’re central to the show Elsbeth.

Over the course of more than ten years and across three different TV series, you might expect Elsbeth’s character to evolve or for Preston to portray her differently. But surprisingly, she has remained consistent, which suggests a deep understanding of this character. This consistency is what makes Elsbeth fascinating and enjoyable to watch unfold.

While Elsbeth’s Outlook On Work And Her Job Evolve Between Shows, Carrie Preston Still Plays Her In An Honest And Consistent Way

What adds to the enjoyment is that while Elsbeth retains her unique personality, mannerisms, and problem-solving strategies, there’s been a shift in her motivations and profession. This creates an intriguing watching experience as I follow Elsbeth‘s current season (airing on the 2025 TV schedule) and simultaneously watch the seven seasons of The Good Wife.

In simpler terms, Elsbeth hasn’t changed much in her behavior or problem-solving skills, but her reasons for doing things and job have changed. This makes watching both shows at once interesting and exciting!

On Thursdays, I tune in to watch Elsbeth tackle crimes and uphold what most would view as righteous causes. In contrast, for the rest of the week, I follow the cast of The Good Wife, who are engaged in less morally clear-cut battles to win their cases.

Elsbeth’s work ethic and character remain consistent, but her ethical standards appear questionable. On the show “The Good Wife,” she is a surprisingly ruthless attorney, prepared to go to great lengths to secure a victory in court – as demonstrated by her defense of Peter, Alicia, Will, and others.

On Elsbeth, she’s trying to do what’s right and almost repent in a way for her actions as a lawyer.

I find the contrast in her character development quite captivating and it’s truly remarkable. Yet, when it comes to Carrie Preston’s portrayal of Elsbeth, she remains consistently the same. Fundamentally, Elsbeth is a bundle of joy, sincere, deeply compassionate, and incredibly funny. She also possesses a high level of intelligence, self-assuredness, and vigilance.

I’m captivated by the fact that what was established in Season 1 when she first entered the Florrick’s apartment on The Good Wife remains consistent, and I eagerly anticipate seeing more of her as I continue to binge-watch this timeless CBS series, along with its spinoff which is quickly gaining classic status.
