Why Claudia Black Thinks Aeryn Was the “Most Interesting” Character in All of Farscape

Among many cherished classic sci-fi series, Farscape (currently streaming on Peacock) stood out for its intriguing character ideas. From the alien with a helmet-like head called Pilot, to Rygel whose gruff personality was accentuated by his moth-like tufts, the SYFY show (formerly known as the Sci-Fi Channel) benefited greatly from the creative prowess of The Jim Henson Company’s practical effects team, which was incredibly imaginative.

In the science fiction series overflowing with strange extraterrestrial beings, it was the human or humanoid characters in Farscape that truly shone and left the deepest impact. This is one of the many impressions that Farscape’s enduring influence had on Claudia Black, who portrayed Aeryn Sun alongside Ben Browder (as John Crichton, a genuine human). They played two of the series’ most human-like space species.

“Just phenomenal” — Farscape’s Claudia Black on playing Aeryn Sun

In the early 2000s, Black had numerous thoughts, as she conversed with BBC fan site Farscape Cult during the final production of the series. As the show concluded its successful four-season run, she reminisced about her journey onboard the spacecraft Moya, a character that was both sentient and alive. Prideful of the opportunity to make Aeryn, an emotionally complex ex-Peacekeeper character, her own through her acting, Black noted how the relationship between Aeryn and Crichton gradually revealed more of her human side.

In his reflection, Black shared that playing Aeryn was simply extraordinary; she was absolutely outstanding. While it might seem biased, Aeryn was undeniably one of the most fascinating characters, possibly even the most intriguing. What made her stand out as a performer was the extensive character development she underwent, which unfolded primarily through the relationship with Crichton and love. As an actor, this aspect checked many boxes for me because it was a romantic storyline, making it engaging. Initially, the producers controlled the pace of revealing her character development, but eventually, the story took over and Aeryn began to assert herself in unique ways.

Originally created by Rockne S. O’Bannon (known for shows like Defiance and Alien Nation), Farscape concluded its television run with a heart-pounding cliffhanger, which was later resolved in the miniseries event, Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars (now streaming on Peacock). Remarkably, Black continued to play a pivotal role in The Peacekeeper Wars, much like she did during the original run of Farscape.

During the gap between the conclusion of the Farscape series and the start of The Peacekeeper Wars, Black expressed a heartfelt unwillingness to leave Aeryn’s narrative arc incomplete. “I can hardly accept that I won’t witness more of Aeryn and Crichton on screen,” she stated. “This realization has deeply affected me, understanding that something significant about them needs to be conclusively resolved and depicted visually at the end of Season 4. As I’ve mentioned previously, I am a hopeless romantic, and I truly believe that what we developed between them is substantial enough for the audience to feel confident that there will be a happy ending.
