Following the buzz and hype surrounding Thanos’ snap, which was ubiquitous on all significant social media networks, 2024 wasn’t a standout year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The quality of its releases seemed lackluster compared to the high standards set earlier, and the growing exhaustion among audiences towards superhero films made them less receptive to Marvel productions last year. It’s clear that the MCU could benefit from a renewed burst of excitement that it has been missing since Endgame. Although Deadpool & Wolverine revived interest during the summer, there’s an expectation that the MCU is poised to regain its dominance once more.
There’s a lot to look forward to in the near future! Fanatics are thrilled about the upcoming revivals of the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Blade series, as well as the incorporation of these characters along with others such as Daredevil into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To make things even more exciting, there’s been another recent announcement that has brought immense happiness to comic book enthusiasts – the Black Panther role is set to be recast.
As speculation swirls on social media about potential successors for Chadwick Boseman in superhero circles, let’s voice our preference: We believe Damson Idris should take over from the late actor. Contrary to one report suggesting he wasn’t keen on the part, here are our reasons for backing Damson Idris as the ideal replacement.
Damson Idris Was Electrifying in ‘Snowfall’
If you’re not familiar with him, Damson Idris starred as the main character, Franklin Saint, in the intense crime drama series titled “Snowfall.” This series aired on FX from 2017 to 2023 and received numerous accolades. Notably, it was the final project for the late, acclaimed director John Singleton, who is known for his work on “Boyz n the Hood.”
“Snowfall” is a fictional account that delves into the origins of the crack epidemic in the 1980s and how it devastated Black communities in Los Angeles, eventually spreading across the country. This series was incredibly impactful, uncompromising, and exceptionally well-crafted.
At the helm of everything stood Idris. Portraying a highly intelligent, young Black man whose life takes a dark turn as he starts selling cocaine to his own community, Idris was captivating in this role and held the screen with an allure seldom seen in 21st-century productions. The entire cast delivered outstanding performances, and the show’s quality was consistently exceptional from beginning to end. However, it was often Idris who drew the most focus. Despite his character being one that attracted many, it was the remarkable way he played it that truly captivated viewers.
Damson Idris Would be a Worthy Successor to Chadwick Boseman
The unfortunate circumstances surrounding King T’Challa’s recasting are deeply saddening. Chadwick Boseman, who would have likely continued in the role, tragically passed away prematurely due to colon cancer. When fans learned that he had filmed his final performances as Black Panther while battling stage IV cancer, there was an overwhelming display of sadness and admiration for his courage and dedication to the role.
In the role he played, there will always be a significant legacy looming large, considering the context of his performance and the events surrounding it. The newcomer taking over this position will undoubtedly inherit gigantic footsteps to follow. Initially, the Marvel Cinematic Universe decided to write off the character and pass the mantle to Letitia Wright as Shuri. However, recent reports suggest that the MCU might consider recasting T’Challa, an idea that has sparked curiosity among fans.
If there’s any actor who could follow Boseman’s impressive portrayal, it’s Idris Elba. On screen, he exudes wisdom and a strength that transcends his age. At just 33 years old, with many years ahead of him in his career, he would be an excellent choice to take on the role of Black Panther, should such an opportunity arise and become a long-term commitment for him.
Should He Try to Fill Chadwick Boseman’s Shoes as the Panther?
If Damson Idris were to secure the Black Panther role, many might question if he could measure up to Chadwick Boseman’s performance. However, while Idris’ supporters would likely answer affirmatively, a more pertinent query might be whether he should aim for such a challenge at all. Given that replicating or surpassing the impact of Chadwick Boseman in this role is an insurmountable task, it would be wiser for the incoming actor to establish his unique identity within the role instead.
Damson Idris Is a Truly Special Actor
Damson Idris demonstrates a remarkable talent and presence as an actor, showcased notably in Snowfall. Yet, his versatility extends beyond this role, with appearances in movies such as The Commuter and Astral, and an upcoming part alongside Brad Pitt in the anticipated sports drama F1 this year. As BET noted, Idris was prepared to delve into the shadows to portray Franklin Saint’s most sinister aspects during Snowfall’s final season.
I moved towards a corner and began staring intently at the wall, finding myself whispering, ‘Devil, Devil, approach me, approach me.’ I felt an overwhelming urge to act irrationally due to the situation. For an entire month, I suffered from recurring nightmares, waking up daily with a sense of dread. It seemed like there was some sort of ominous presence, and I resorted to prayer and various rituals to try and dispel it.
If that’s not a dedication, then what is? If you haven’t encountered Idris and Snowfall yet, take some time to check out the series. After watching it, explore some interviews of Idris, and you’ll instantly realize why he’s poised to be one of the greatest actors of our era. You can stream Snowfall on Hulu now.
