Joe Perry embodies the timeless essence of a rock guitarist. He’s the calm, reserved one who plays stunning solos while his more extravagant bandmate takes center stage. If you think of Slash compared to Axl Rose, or Keith Richards alongside Mick Jagger, that’s the dynamic Perry had during Aerosmith’s glory days in the 1970s. However, he eventually decided to step away from the spotlight.
As a dedicated fan of Aerosmith, I wasn’t part of their lineup from 1979 to 1984 – just a fraction of their long and illustrious history. To most bands, those years might feel like an eternity, but not to Aerosmith. During that time, Jimmy Crespo stepped in as lead guitarist while I was out, making it easy for fans to overlook the band’s leaner years.
Perry walked away from Aerosmith in 1979
During the World Series of Rock in 1979, feelings ran strongly among Aerosmith’s members. An incident occurred where Joe Perry’s wife allegedly threw a glass of milk at Tom Hamilton’s wife. This triggered chaos, and Perry and lead singer Steven Tyler had a heated argument which strained their relationship. Subsequently, despite being in the midst of recording the album Night In the Ruts, Perry decided to part ways with the band shortly after.
During a 2024 interview with Guitar World, Perry openly confessed that his feelings towards his bandmates were less about anger and more about exhaustion from being in the band. He also expressed frustration over the lack of financial transparency within Aerosmith. “I desired a thorough examination of our business transactions to understand where our funds were going,” Perry explained. “We tended to ignore such matters, simply depositing checks into the bank without proper scrutiny.
The guitarist rejoined the band in 1984

The musician carried some of his original works along and established the Joe Perry Project, a band. Immediately, they garnered success with their 1980 album titled “Let the Music Do the Talking“, but later releases didn’t create much buzz. At first, Perry experienced a sense of relief when he ventured solo, but looking back, the guitarist admitted that it was never intended to be a permanent separation.
Perry expressed that he didn’t think, “I’ll never play with them again,” but rather felt a temporary need for a break. His assessment proved correct as he reconnected with Aerosmith in 1984 and has remained with the band since then. During the late 1980s and 90s, Aerosmith produced some of their most successful singles.
In 2001, Joe Perry was honored by being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside his fellow Aerosmith members. Then, he decided to stop touring in 2024.
