Zeenat Aman featured in Shammi Kapoor’s initial directorial project, a romantic comedy titled “Manoranjan,” which also starred Sanjeev Kumar. This movie hit the screens way back in 1974. Leveraging her social media presence effectively, the actress from The Royals family recently shared an intriguing story connected to this film on her Instagram account.
On May 23rd, I shared a delightful throwback video snippet from the movie Manoranjan, showcasing none other than myself. In my accompanying post, I reminisced, “A lively group of captivating and spirited women, portraying prostitutes, playfully instruct and chide an upright constable during a ride to the station.
She went on to express that while many people criticize ‘remakes’, she feels particularly proud to have been part of Shammi Kapoor’s directorial debut, “Manoranjan”, which was a remake of the American romantic comedy “Irma La Douce”.
Speaking about her involvement in the film, The Royals’ actress expressed, “As I was finding my own feminist identity, I was eager to delve into a role that challenged societal norms. Specifically, the assumption that a prostitute must be unhappy, ashamed, ostracized, and longing for a savior. In my opinion, Nisha is a character on par with Rupa and Janice – truly iconic.

Beyond that, I couldn’t help but share some insights about my remarkable director, Shammi Kapoor. You see, it was my dear neighbor and confidant, the esteemed producer FC Mehra, who graciously introduced us.
Aman shared that she didn’t develop a deep friendship with Shammi through work, but rather experienced great professional satisfaction working alongside an exceptionally talented director who was both musically gifted and friendly. She commended Kapoor for his ability to create an inspiring atmosphere for the cast and crew and for occasionally showing off his playful side.
The seasoned actress also recalled an instance when Kapoor playfully joked about Sanjeev Kumar’s supposed romantic outings, which were always a source of amusement for those seated around the table.
To sum up, Aman praised Manoranjan as a wild escapade and advised fans to appreciate the Dulhan Maike Chali tune. This song was written by Anand Bakshi, sung by the three Mangeshkar sisters, and orchestrated by R.D. Burman.
In his professional life, Aman recently appeared in a romantic comedy on Netflix titled “The Royals,” which starred Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar.
