For Pixar enthusiasts eagerly awaiting summer releases in 2025, there’s exciting news: A fresh, original production from the animation powerhouse titled “Elio” is on its way! With only a few weeks left until its premiere, let’s delve into what we uncovered during our visit to Emeryville, California, where we got an exclusive sneak peek at this highly anticipated project. Of particular interest is the intriguing character, Elio, who already sports a distinctive eyepatch.
In the story named Elio, we’ll accompany an 11-year-old boy who has grown deeply fascinated by space and extraterrestrials, particularly after the tragic loss of his parents. His desire to escape Earth and be taken by them is so strong that he wishes for alien abduction as a means to alleviate his loneliness. From the 20 minutes of footage I’ve watched, it appears that Elio has recently moved in with his Aunt Olga (played by Zoe Saldaña) on a military base and makes contact with actual aliens, ultimately fulfilling his long-held dream.
Upon careful examination of the trailers, it might strike you, as it did me, that Elio sports an eyepatch in certain scenes while he doesn’t wear one in others. During my discussion with the animation team supervisors, I inquired about this discrepancy. Here’s what Jude Brownbill explained:
In the footage, you didn’t witness how he obtained his eyepatch, but he now sports one. That’s all we can confirm. It was a bit of a conundrum since we pondered whether he would wear it throughout the movie. However, it serves as a distinctive feature for Elio, making him easily recognizable. Essentially, it functions like an identifier for him. Fortunately, it didn’t pose significant complications in our animation process. In other words, it was one less eye we needed to animate.
It turns out that Elio’s eyepatch is quite significant. As Brownbill, the animation supervisor for Soul, revealed, this detail was beneficial for their team since it meant one less eye they had to animate, making the character stand out in a distinctive way.
While touring Pixar, they shared a segment from their upcoming movie, yet instead of the initial twenty minutes, we glimpsed various scenes scattered throughout the film. This leads me to suspect there’s something significant that they intend to keep under wraps until the public views the entire film.
The opening scene from the film that we saw earlier sparked intense feelings about Elio’s emotional condition and his connection with his aunt, as it followed the aftermath of their parents’ demise.
At a space museum, Elio and Olga are sharing a meal, but Elio is sitting low on their bench, seemingly detached from the surroundings. Later, he leaves their spot to explore an exhibit, where his passion for space exploration and celestial bodies ignites. He lays down quietly, struck by wonder, as images dance across the walls around him. It’s clear that he has found something captivating – love at first sight with the cosmos.
In the subsequent sequences, I observed Elio floating in space, residing within a colossal space station known as the Communiverse – a habitation driftingly suspended in the cosmos, inhabited by leaders from various alien species. He was wearing an eyepatch, and it piqued my curiosity. I can’t help but speculate that he might have injured his eye during abduction, but we’ll find out soon enough.
Animation supervisor Travis Hathaway also said this about the topic in our interview:
As a die-hard movie buff, I was genuinely intrigued when I stumbled upon a film centered around a child with dreams of being a spacefaring pirate. Frankly, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but as the story unfolded, I found myself pleasantly surprised by how seamlessly this unique concept was integrated into the narrative. By the end, it all made perfect sense and added a refreshing twist to the movie.
I’m curious to see how closely Elio resembles my favorite pirate films, including the less recognized Disney movie Treasure Planet. The answer will be revealed when the latest Pixar film premieres in theaters on June 20. I really hope it turns out to be one of Pixar’s best movies, as I adore that studio so much.
