Why Donnie Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods Spin-Off Recast Danny Reagan’s Son Sean

Danny Regan (Donnie Wahlberg) will move to Massachusetts as he starts his own spin-off of “Blue Bloods,” titled “Boston Blue.” This change isn’t due to him being unfamiliar with the new setting, but because his son, Sean, is a significant character in the show. However, Andrew Terraciano, who has played Sean for years, will no longer be portraying the role. Instead, Mika Amonsen, known from “Thanksgiving,” has been chosen to bring Sean to life in this new series. Since viewers last saw Sean as a cadet, producers decided it was time for him to have a fresh look that fits his new profession as a beat cop.

It seems that Sean’s occupation has given him a New England vibe. Recognizing the esteemed law enforcement history his family has built in New York City, Sean chose to establish himself on the force in Boston, distancing himself from the familial expectations that come with being a Reagan and wearing a badge. Unfortunately for him, Danny follows suit and takes a job with the police in Boston as well, leading to father and son working together professionally. This development significantly enriches “Boston Blue” by introducing a strong familial bond between Danny and other characters, mirroring the close-knit Reagan family dynamics that made “Blue Bloods” unique compared to other procedurals and provided much of its compelling narrative.

From my perspective as a devoted fan, this scenario will let Sean and Danny bond in a way reminiscent of the Reagans during their intimate dinners on the original series. However, it’ll also create an undeniable tension between the father-son pair. It seems that Sean is set to break free from Danny’s shadow, a journey that could lead to either triumph or turmoil. On the other hand, Danny will need to relinquish his protective grip over his greenhorn son. Although this plotline might ignite drama for “Boston Blue,” it feels somewhat discordant with the Sean we came to know from “Blue Bloods.

Sean becoming a cop makes little sense

To longtime viewers, it’s surprising that Sean, the character, has chosen a career as a beat cop, given his passion for art and aspiration to become a firefighter on the show “Blue Bloods.” Unlike his brother Jack, who is more serious and responsible, Sean often leans towards rebellious behavior, such as cutting classes, neglecting studies, and underage drinking. Therefore, turning him into a police officer like many of his family members feels like an unforeseen and somewhat dull turn of events in the series.

In Beantown, Danny Reagan won’t just face a fresh-faced son as his main hurdle; he’ll also encounter resistance from his new partner, Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), who has a rich family background in upholding the law. He’s likely to cross paths with other members of the Silver clan while working in Boston: Sarah (Maggie Lawson), Jonah (Marcus Scribner), and Mae (Gloria Reuben). Moreover, Ernie Hudson will join the cast as Reverend Peters when “Boston Blue” premieres on CBS this fall.
