As a former military investigator and badass, Johnson would have easily portrayed him with authority, potentially reshaping the landscape of movie heroes based on books. Regrettably, the casting process in Hollywood isn’t always straightforward, ultimately leading to Tom Cruise landing the role initially, before being replaced by Alan Ritchson who turned out to be a more suitable fit.

Back in the ’80s, if Jack Reacher had been created, Arnold Schwarzenegger might have portrayed him. However, Reacher didn’t make his first appearance until the 1997 book “The Killing Floor.” Since then, he has featured in 28 novels and short stories. Interestingly, Johnson tried out for the role in the Paramount movies, but was turned down. Despite this, Lee Child initially appreciated Tom Cruise being cast, but later admitted that it was a misstep, confessing that Alan Ritchson would have been a more suitable Reacher.

During a Q&A session on Facebook Live, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed that he had longed for a specific role in Hollywood which he didn’t manage to secure, and that role was the iconic character of Jack Reacher from the Fast & Furious films.

In Hollywood, many actors compete for roles as they often require specific physical attributes such as appearance, skin tone, or body size. Fortunately, in my case, there aren’t many other actors who resemble me, which means most of the roles I’ve gotten have been tailored to fit me – with the exception of Jack Reacher.

In simpler terms, the filmmakers didn’t consider it prudent to choose someone similar to him instead of Cruise, who has a stellar track record in box office success. Conversely, Johnson wasn’t yet established in Hollywood when the first Jack Reacher movie was being made. His wrestling fame had waned and his significant hits were limited to movies like “The Scorpion King” and “The Other Guys”.

Johnson faced opposition due to the selection of the director as well. Christopher McQuarrie, who later became a frequent collaborator of Tom Cruise, had previously teamed up with Cruise in “Valkyrie” and developed a strong bond with him. This preference for McQuarrie over all other actors who auditioned was established due to their successful partnership.

Johnson admits that he was disappointed by the snub. But he accepted the outcome anyway.

Ten years back, I found myself in a completely distinct phase of life. I acknowledge that fact. Yet, there was no denying the colossal stardom Tom had achieved in the global film scene, while I was still navigating my way through.

Looking back now, I can confidently say that my career trajectory with movies has been nothing short of satisfying for me, and that’s all thanks to the incredible roles I’ve played over the years. Dwayne Johnson, here, feeling grateful and humbled by the journey so far.

Missing Out on Jack Reacher Opened Other Doors for Dwayne Johnson

It’s possible that Dwayne Johnson felt a sense of disappointment at the time, but not getting the role in “Jack Reacher” turned out to be a fortunate turn of events for him. The filming for “Jack Reacher” started just before “Fast Five,” and if Johnson had been chosen for the former, he might never have had the opportunity to portray Luke Hobbs, a character that significantly boosted his career.

Prior to his involvement with the Fast & Furious series, Johnson was primarily a B-list actor. However, he joined the franchise at an opportune moment, as the studio chose to invest more funds and amplify the storyline’s intensity. The character of Luke Hobbs, a no-nonsense DSS agent chasing down our favorite criminal masterminds, was particularly well-developed. Johnson’s performance in this ensemble cast caught the attention of many in Hollywood. Subsequently, he began to secure major roles. From movies like Hercules and San Andreas, his career trajectory continued to rise.

Johnson is equally grateful. Reflecting on his journey, he recognizes that he’s been fortunate to enjoy a great deal of creative liberty in portraying characters that seem tailor-made for him. If he had landed the role of Jack Reacher, he feels he wouldn’t have had the room to express himself creatively and shape the character as he desired.

“I look back with gratitude that I did not get Jack Reacher.”

It’s widely thought that most Fast & Furious fans share this sentiment: If anyone other than Dwayne Johnson had been cast as Luke Hobbs, the franchise might still be crawling instead of soaring like a butterfly. Johnson brought an undeniable charm to the role that would have been challenging for any other large actor to replicate. This charisma, in turn, seems to have pushed the producers to amp up the action and chaos.

Johnson’s Rejection Arguably Benefited the Jack Reacher Franchise, Too

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve often pondered about how different Jack Reacher could have been if Johnson had taken on the role instead of Tom Cruise. With Johnson as the protagonist, we might have seen more films exploring this intriguing character. Perhaps we’d be discussing “Jack Reacher 6” by now. However, in that scenario, the Prime Video show wouldn’t have materialized. But here’s the question: Would that have been a blessing or a curse?

As a passionate movie reviewer, I must confess that the response from fans played a pivotal role in the termination of the film series based on Lee Child’s books. The towering figure of Jack Reacher, who stands at 6’5″, was a hard act to follow for the 5’7″ actor chosen for the role. This discrepancy didn’t sit well with many book readers, and their constant complaints caught the attention of Mr. Child himself. In an attempt to appease his loyal fanbase, he assured us that the character would find a new home on television, specifically on a streaming platform like Netflix. True to his word, it was announced that Amazon Prime Video had greenlit a Jack Reacher TV series, offering our beloved character a fresh start on the small screen.

Apart from some over-the-top scenes, the series has been quite impressive. Alan Ritchson, who is as refined off-screen as he is a drifter-like character on it, fits Jack Reacher’s physical description remarkably well. However, he brings an unique sense of menace to the role. His fighting style, gestures, and overall demeanor perfectly encapsulate the character as described in the books. Ritchson’s physical presence alone sends shivers down your spine, even when only his back is shown on screen. He masterfully portrays hidden underworlds where good and evil coexist in equal parts. Additionally, he skillfully uses his eyes and body language to convey emotions, while also injecting needed humor into a generally intense depiction of the drifter’s life.

Moreover, television provides an expansive exploration of the original content, which the Tom Cruise films sometimes seemed to gloss over. However, the show meticulously recreates all elements from the books and even adds more depth.

Critics tend not to favor Dwayne Johnson, particularly when he acts alone instead of as part of a group. He usually garners criticism rather than praise.

Everything worked out well for everyone in the end.
