Head’s Up: This review discloses plot points from the movie Another Simple Favor. Emily, portrayed by Blake Lively, makes a reappearance in this film, despite her imprisonment in the initial movie. She was first seen as the stylishly sophisticated mother with a hidden past in the 2018 release A Simple Favor, where she befriended Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick), a cheerful single mom who gets entangled in a complex tale of death, deception, and treachery. The new film, released on May 1st on Prime Video, brings back director Paul Feig and screenwriter Jessica Sharzer, now collaborating with Laeta Kalogridis for the script.

Additionally to the crew’s comeback, several of the initial cast members have been added to the Another Simple Favor ensemble. Notably, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively will reprise their roles, although the film’s opening scene needed to clarify how Emily returns after being incarcerated at the end of the previous movie.

As I step back onto the silver screen at the beginning of 2025’s “Another Simple Favor,” I’m asked about my recent freedom. I explain that I’m currently out on appeal, attributing my release to the intricate workings of the American legal system. Yet, as the narrative unfolds, the veil over the situation grows thinner. At first, it was a mystery who financed the team of high-priced lawyers that showed up to fight my case, but eventually, it’s revealed that these legal eagles were funded by the enigmatic Dante Versano (Michele Morrone), a new character whose lavish wedding in Capri serves as the movie’s central backdrop.

As a cinephile, allow me to share my perspective on a character named Dante, who seems accustomed to getting his way. Born into affluence, he’s been handling power and influence since his father’s untimely demise at a tender age. It turns out that the Versanos are deeply entrenched in the Italian mafia, giving them an edge in bypassing various laws, not just within Italy, but also in the United States. This is vividly demonstrated in a scene where Dante’s mother Portia (Ricci) tries to orchestrate the illegal transfer of Stephanie from house arrest and her subsequent assassination.

Her Relationship To Emily Is Complicated

Emily’s liberation from prison takes an intricate turn in the ending of “Another Simple Favor”, as her long-lost triplet sister Charity (previously played by Blake Lively as their other sister Faith) steps in to stand in for Emily. This move could pave the way for a third movie if given the go-ahead by the studio, and it also offers Emily an opportunity to become part of the Versano empire, as suggested in the film’s final scene when she is approached by Portia. Charity willingly accepts this role swap for various reasons.

Charity is heavily swayed by Emily due to their strong sibling bond, forged over many years. Tragically, Emily’s sisters believed she was deceased. While under the control of Aunt Linda, who exploited her in numerous schemes, Charity developed a deep romantic and sexual affection for Emily, as well as the conviction that their triplet link makes them essentially one person. This belief is what drives her actions at the end of “Another Simple Favor,” where she agrees to the plan out of a desire to please her sister and a genuine belief that their interchangeability renders her individual identity insignificant in relation to her captivity.
