Why Farscape’s Claudia Black Wasn’t Overwhelmed Joining Stargate SG-1

Just before Claudia Black joined the set for her Season 8 guest role in Stargate SG-1, she had recently completed one of the most iconic television roles in science fiction history, having only a few days to spare.

Over four seasons on Farscape, currently streaming on Peacock, as well as its follow-up event series Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, the character of Aeryn Sun, played by Black, underwent significant development. Initially a cold and emotionless space soldier, she transformed into a compassionate and vulnerable figure, portraying a nurturing wife and mother in contrast to Ben Browder’s character, John Crichton.

In a science fiction show, the role was complex and filled with emotional depth – quite different from the character of a cunning thief that Black initially auditioned for, portraying the character Vala Mal Doran in Stargate SG-1.

How Claudia Black managed her big pivot from Farscape to Stargate SG-1

In its eighth season, the character Black made an appearance in “Stargate SG-1”, engaging in an entertaining and sometimes humorous confrontation with Dr. Daniel Jackson, portrayed by Michael Shanks, as Vala Mal Doran in the episode “Prometheus Unbound”. Both fans of the series and its creators soon recognized that the interaction between Black’s character and Shanks was too captivating to limit it to just one episode. As a result, Black continued to reappear for a recurring role in Season 9, eventually becoming a significant fixture in the show, starring alongside the main cast throughout the final 10th season (and later appearing in two sequel films).

Discussing the shift in character dynamics with the fan site GateWorld, Black explained that the sudden change in pace, along with transitioning from a content and “happy” set like SG-1 to a role with more comedic opportunities than her character Aeryn from Farscape allowed, made it effortless for her to embrace this new role.

She mentioned that ‘Prometheus Unbound’ was intended as a single-location story, with a limited budget, no scenes set off-world or expensive locations. This format appealed to her initially because it meant a self-contained narrative, allowing viewers to get accustomed to the storyline gradually without being immediately overwhelmed by an extensive universe.

Vala was described as being “extremely lively and, ideally, amusing. The audience took a strong liking to her, particularly during filming, right away due to the chemistry between Vala and Daniel. She’s an ideal counterpart for him because he is so grave, while she is simply a delightful burst of energy. Moreover, her untrustworthy nature adds humor, giving me plenty of room for comedic exploration.

With mere days left before finishing her last scenes for “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars” and stepping onto the set of “Stargate SG-1” for Season 8, Black had to quickly catch a flight. However, Black mentioned that co-producer Andy Mikita of “SG-1” assured her that she wouldn’t be walking into a tense environment: “When I talked to the producers on the phone, and Andy Mikita in advance, they said, ‘A show that’s been running this long, they’re going to be a positive set so I believe you’ll find it enjoyable,’” Black recounted. “And they were spot-on with their prediction.

In the authorization to develop Black’s character further in “Stargate SG-1”, the creative team decided to transform Vala Mal Doran into a character undergoing redemption, simultaneously deepening her bond with Dr. Daniel Jackson. Notably, before even the entirety of her “SG-1” narrative was penned during her 2005 interview with GateWorld, Black sensed that she had discovered yet another science fiction persona she could embody completely.

Transitioning from maintaining the significant dramatic essence of Farscape as a series, to now contributing significantly to the comedic aspects in our Stargate SG-1 scenes, is both challenging and intimidating, but it’s also incredibly enjoyable,” said Black.
