As a cinephile who has witnessed countless love stories unfold on the silver screen, I must say that the sex scene in “We Live In Time” is one of the most poignant and profound I’ve ever encountered. Having battled through my own health challenges, the raw emotion portrayed by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh during their intimate moments resonated deeply with me. The way they clung to each other, their expressions of love, and the understanding that tough times were ahead – it was a powerful reminder of the strength found in love during difficult times.
Spoilers ahead for We Live In Time.
Audience members have consistently enjoyed watching romantic storylines unfold, even in classic romantic comedies that conclude on a sad note. The latest film starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, titled “We Live In Time“, falls into the category of films with tragic endings as it centers around a couple and their family, with Pugh’s character battling cancer. Although the movie is not overtly sexual in nature, it does contain passionate scenes between the renowned actors, Garfield and Pugh. Here’s why I believe the romantic scene in this film stands out as one of the best I’ve seen in recent years.
What we know about We Live In Time has been limited, but I had the privilege of seeing an early screening at the Hamptons International Film Festival. While the movie’s poster was memed, it’s a moving piece of film. And the movie’s big sex scene is notable because of the way it moves the story forward, and how much is communicated without words between the two protagonists.
The narrative of We Live In Time fluctuates through various years in Tobias and Almut’s (Garfield and Pugh) relationship. As we discover her ovarian cancer reoccurring, she grapples with whether to undergo treatment or simply savor the remaining time in her life.
Although it appears Pugh’s character is preparing to peacefully pass her remaining months, she subsequently discloses to Tobias a desire to make love before treatment starts. Tobias’ response is heartfelt, as he feels relieved they can face this challenge together. In a subsequent romantic scene, their feelings are vividly portrayed through physical affection, understanding that chemotherapy and surgery lie ahead. Tobias tenderly kisses Almut’s scars, symbolizing his deep love for her and empathy towards the battle she has waged against the disease in the past.
I rarely come across a film scene that was so powerfully emotional and crucial to the movie’s narrative as the one in question. It wasn’t merely an opportunity to watch two prominent actors strip down and be sensual; it went far beyond that, offering something much deeper. While their romance was entertaining, it was their interactions during challenging times that truly made this project stand out from a typical romantic comedy.
