In order to create an engaging experience for all players when a new fighting game is developed, it’s crucial to ensure a well-balanced character lineup. It wouldn’t be fair or enjoyable if there were too many characters with similar abilities, as gaming preferences can vary greatly among individuals. If your preferred character doesn’t appear in the initial roster, chances are they have a gameplay counterpart included instead.
By emphasizing individuality, we were reminded of how Injustice 2 tackled this issue effectively. Instead of replacing a character with a clone, the developers opted to create alternate skins for the existing fighters. Despite being skins, they still had distinct voices and unique character interactions, giving the impression that each one was entirely separate.
How has no other fighting game copied this feature yet?
One popular aspect of Injustice 2 that drew fans in was its feature allowing various characters to be playable without occupying another character’s roster space. Instead of creating separate entities for Mr. Freeze and Captain Cold, they shared similar move-sets. This approach was also applied to numerous other heroes and villains, making Reverse-Flash and Power Girl alternate costumes for The Flash and Supergirl respectively.
Could you envision the amount of resources Marvel could conserve by implementing this idea for a future fighting game? By having Spider-Gwen serve as an alternative appearance for Spider-Man, with unique dialogue, they could do the same for Yelena Belova and Black Widow. Similarly, fans would appreciate Betty Ray Bill appearing as an alternate skin for Thor.
In Street Fighter V, they almost offered alternate costumes for characters, modeled after other popular Capcom franchises. For instance, Ken donned a Dante costume, Chun-Li wore Morrigan’s getup, and Oni showcased an awesome Asura appearance. Although these outfits were terrific, the characters retained their original voices, meaning you didn’t get to experience Dante with Ken’s moveset.
Although NetherRealm initially presented this concept in Injustice 2, they’ve only implemented it sparingly since then. However, in Mortal Kombat 11, they launched a movie pack DLC and re-enlisted the original actors to voice their characters once more. Similarly, Mortal Kombat 1 featured a character version of Johnny Cage portrayed by Jean-Claude Van Damme, as he was originally intended to play this role.

There’s still plenty of room to develop and expand on this alternative character skin feature in Street Fighter 6. The game could greatly benefit from distinctive skins for each character, such as an Evil version of Ryu or an Oni appearance for Akuma. Additionally, a Decapre-themed skin for Cammy would be fantastic, especially if it included special dialogue when she encounters another former Doll.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled about the fantastic new feature we’re working on. The move-sets and initial design are in place, but it calls for new voice actors and unique dialogue to bring each character interaction alive. It’s going to take some extra elbow grease, but I believe the end result will be worth it for our fans. These aren’t your average costumes – they offer a level of depth that will set them apart from the rest.
