As a die-hard fan of the Lord of the Rings franchise, I deeply respect and admire Hugo Weaving for his unwavering commitment to the world he helped shape through his iconic portrayal of Elrond. His decision to step away from revisiting Middle Earth is not only understandable but also commendable. After spending such an extensive period immersed in this magical realm, it’s no wonder that he might feel a sense of exhaustion or even nostalgia fatigue when it comes to re-entering the world of Elves, Men, and Dwarves.
Despite Amazon’s Prime Video series, “The Rings of Power,” achieving immense popularity and outperforming other shows on its platform prior to Season 2’s release, one of the original Lord of the Rings cast members has chosen not to watch it. As Frodo (Elijah Wood), Sam (Sean Astin), and their companions arrive at Lothlórien, they are welcomed by half-elf Elrond, portrayed by Hugo Weaving. Elrond plays a significant role in the story, organizing the Fellowship of the Ring and ultimately entrusting Frodo with the mission to destroy the One Ring in Mount Doom’s fires.
In the storyline of “The Rings of Power,” we’re transported to Middle Earth during its Second Age. Michael Weatherly’s character was significant in both “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” film series, but he has chosen not to watch any further developments within the franchise.

In a chat with Radio Times, Weaving expressed that he’s unlikely to ever watch the new installments in the Lord of the Rings universe. This implies he won’t be watching “The Rings of Power,” the upcoming animated film, “The War for Rohirrim,” or the live-action movie, “The Hunt for Gollum.”
The actor admitted that he has nothing against new filmmakers adding to the lore of Jackson’s on-screen world (and by extension J.R.R. Tolkien’s books), but he has spent too long acting in said world to engross himself in any new LotR stories. Despite his disinterest in watching The Rings of Power, Hugo Weaving wishes actor Robert Aramayo (who plays a younger version of Elrond), all the best. The actor explained:
“I didn’t get a chance to watch it, and I apologize to Robert for that. Frankly, after spending so much time in Middle-earth, I’ve developed a deep affection for New Zealand, where I recently returned from. However, despite the film’s grandeur, The Lord of the Rings trilogy isn’t a role that carries the same weight or significance in my mind as it might for fans. So, once again, I apologize to Robert, but I haven’t had a chance to see the latest movie.”
The Rings of Power Season 2 Receives Strong Reviews From Critics
The debut season of The Rings of Power sparked a diverse response, with both critics and viewers expressing varying opinions. Although it earned an impressive 83% approval rating from critics, it garnered a less favorable 38% score among fans on review aggregator sites. Regrettably, some of the unfavorable feedback was due to legitimate concerns from spectators, while other negative reviews were the result of biased criticism by a section of the fan base engaging in review bombing.
As viewers’ reactions continue to pour in, initial critical reviews for The Rings of Power Season 2 are surfacing online, hinting at the possibility that it might replicate its predecessor’s success. With a current rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 30 reviews, this season is being praised as more enigmatic, mysterious, and darker compared to Season 1, according to co-showrunner Patrick McKay.
