Why Hulu’s Oscar Night Fail Left Viewers Outraged and Anora’s Win Overlooked

Suppose you were at the 2017 Oscars and right as they announced “La La Land” for Best Picture, your feed suddenly stopped. To get a sense of what I experienced during the 2025 Oscar ceremony, envision missing out on the final two award categories of the night.

It turns out that exactly what transpired is this: I, along with all Hulu subscribers without the Live TV add-on, missed the closing moments of the ceremony, starting from Mikey Madison’s Best Actress win onwards. In one instant, I was engrossed in James Cameron directing during a Rolex commercial, and in the next instance, I received a notification that the show had concluded, advising me to switch to something else.

Without our Oscars 2025 live blog and the numerous tweets praising and debating Anora’s late victories across the web, I wouldn’t have realized that Sean Baker’s drama was crowned the night’s biggest winner. It seems I’m not alone in my surprise at this unexpected turn of events. As I scrolled through various social media responses on X, I encountered a wave of emotional reactions that unfortunately made Hulu trend for unfortunate reasons.

  • “hulu cutting the oscars because we were told to go back to theaters instead of streaming services” – @joyIuv
  • “Adrian Brody’s Oscar speech was so long that it made the Oscar broadcast go past its viewing time on Hulu” – @Nikstrick
  • “Them letting Adrien Brody ramble on for ten minutes and then Hulu cutting the feed? 😭 #Oscars” – @ricwatches
  • “New rule: if a streaming version plans to stream a live event and botches it, all subscribers should get a free month of their current plan. Looking at you, @hulu” – @BenJamminAsh
  • “#Hulu owes me a damn refund right about now. All that advertisement about streaming the #Oscars2025, only for the site to not work.” – @TranceRevolved
  • “Hulu telling me the Oscars are over when they haven’t announced best picture” – @jordan_hcg

That last response was exceptionally clever, as it referenced one of the recurring themes of humor that ran throughout the night. This was made possible by a Conclave star’s memorable performance at the 97th Academy Awards. In fact, an image of Disappointed John Lithgow was featured in the post and was also seen in numerous other messages criticizing this major streaming service mishap.

It’s now the moment to bring in Mr. Lithgow in this context, to take us back to my dismay regarding the unfavorable manner that Oscar history was established…not in a positive light.

More to come…
