Why James Patterson Thinks Cross Is Right to Not Adapt a Specific Novel

As a lifelong devotee of cinema with a soft spot for gripping crime dramas, I’m beyond excited about the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, Cross. Having followed James Patterson‘s Alex Cross saga since its inception, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with anticipation as we approach this new adaptation.

The much-awaited series titled “Cross” is scheduled for release on Amazon Prime Video later this year, marking another adaptation of author James Patterson‘s beloved character, Alex Cross. Unlike the past movies based on his novels, this new version of the renowned detective and forensic psychologist will depart from tradition by crafting its own narrative, a choice that Patterson expressed to Entertainment Weekly as his preference.

“When someone works on one of my books or characters, I always express a preference for the story to be completely fresh. Ideally, the TV show wouldn’t rely heavily on the book, and fortunately, that’s exactly what happened.

In the series titled “Cross“, Aldis Hodge stars alongside Isaiah Mustafa as characters who join forces to pursue a serial killer from Cross’ past. This villain aims to disrupt his current life. Having previously acted in crime dramas such as “City on a Hill” and “Leverage: Redemption“, this genre is not unfamiliar to Hodge, whose acting abilities have earned him positive reviews from Patterson.

“He’s great at portraying the issues of trying to be a detective and raising a family in this country right now. And he’s got some of that charisma stuff going on, too. What do the kids call it? Rizz?”

Why Cross Decided to Tell Its Own Story

Instead of following the storylines from Lee Child’s Reacher series as closely, Cross creator and showrunner Ben Watkins chose to explore a unique narrative path for his adaptation. This new storyline keeps viewers and fans of Alex Cross books on their toes by keeping them guessing about what will happen next, while also ensuring that the ending remains unpredictable. This creative choice was intentional, but at the same time, Watkins assures that the spirit of Patterson’s novels is preserved for longtime readers.

I made it clear that I wouldn’t adapt any of the seasons from the books. Instead, I wanted to create something fresh for our audience, while staying true to the characters and the world they know and love. At the same time, I aimed to offer a new narrative. Essentially, what they’ll experience will have the familiar feel of the books.

Amazon strongly believes that the series titled “Cross” will thrive, and they have already secured a second season before its premiere. This confidence stems from the success of shows like “Reacher” (and others such as “Bosch”) on their streaming platform. The gripping teaser trailer suggests that “Cross” will continue in this tradition, offering a series brimming with suspense and emotion, featuring a hero who is easy to empathize with. With the necessary elements in place, it remains to be seen whether viewers will deem it a success when the initial eight-episode season becomes available on Prime Video on November 14.
