This writer and director has honed his skills in the murder mystery genre, continuing with the sequel film titled “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and also the Peacock murder mystery series named “Poker Face.

As a cinephile who absolutely adored every facet of the Oscar-nominated “Knives Out,” I wholeheartedly recommend the latest Netflix whodunit series, “The Residence.” For many compelling reasons, this mystery is a must-see if you’re still hooked on intricate plots and captivating characters like me.

The Residence Has a Gender-Swapped Benoit Blanc

If you’re a fan of the intriguing plot twists in Knives Out, you might enjoy watching The Residence as well. While both are murder mysteries, there’s more to it than that. A pivotal figure connecting the Knives Out series is Benoit Blanc, portrayed by Daniel Craig. He’s a brilliant yet eccentric private detective known for his unconventional methods and an untarnished reputation. This character is inspired by Agatha Christie’s iconic detective, Hercule Poirot.

At the core of The Residence, there’s a character reminiscent of eccentricity, embodied by Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba). Similar to Blanc, she exhibits an unusual demeanor, but with distinctive quirks that set her apart. Her fascination with birds is one such idiosyncrasy; during investigations, she’s known to pause and peer into the sky using her binoculars.

Similar to how I admired the intricate plot unfolding in Knives Out, The Residence also captures my attention with its mystery revolving around a murder within a prestigious residence. While Knives Out centers on the demise of the esteemed author Harlan Thrombey (played by the late Christopher Plummer), The Residence focuses on A.B. Wynter (portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito), the Chief Usher of The White House. Both stories share a common thread as they delve into investigations led by skilled private detectives or consultants, unraveling the truth behind the enigmatic deaths.

Audience members will quickly recognize Cupp as a female counterpart to Blanc. They share a unique, somewhat eccentric style that appears aimless to some, with viewers thinking they’re merely wandering around rooms, observing and asking seemingly nonsensical questions. However, when they unveil their findings, meticulously listing minor details gathered en route to arrive at a precise conclusion, it leaves an impact. They are extraordinarily skilled in their craft. There’s a purpose behind their unconventional approach.

The two characters bring humor through their sarcastic remarks, oversized egos, and what appears to be absurd actions. Yet, every spoken word, moment, and action is significant. While Cupp may not exude sophistication, she has her unique charm. It’s hard not to associate this character with Blanc; they are like two eccentric peas in a pod.

A Riveting Murder Case and a Fantastic Ensemble Cast

In both “Knives Out” and “The Residence”, the story opens with the apparent suicide of a notable individual. However, doubt arises in the mind of the detective about this supposed death. Unlike “Knives Out”, where the investigation is confined to a select few family members and staff within an opulent mansion, “The Residence” expands the scope significantly. Instead of just a handful of individuals, author Jeffrey Rosen keeps over 150 people at The White House under scrutiny as potential suspects.

Beyond just the President and members of his administration, this encompasses White House personnel as well as various Australian politicians and key figures. The reason being, it was during a state dinner when these individuals were present.

Both projects showcase an ensemble of well-known actors, each portraying unique characters with over-the-top personalities. In “The Residence”, Aduba and Esposito team up with stars such as Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Randall Park, Molly Griggs, Bronson Pinchot, Al Franken, Jane Curtin, Eliza Coupe, and Kylie Minogue. Although he doesn’t physically appear in the series, Hugh Jackman humorously plays a role.

In Knives Out, viewers were thrilled by the narrative structure where Detective Blanc individually questioned everyone and unveiled differing accounts of the events. Naturally, each character wanted to portray themselves in the most favorable way possible. However, as Blanc assembled all these contrasting narratives, a clear and accurate account gradually emerged.

In “The Residence”, similar to how it happens there, but on a significantly broader scope, Cupp needs to speak with a wide array of individuals. This includes everyone from the assistant usher and the gardener, to the pastry chef, engineer, butler, and even the president’s idle brother.

In addition to the intriguing scenes, the residence is filled with candid moments showing the residents growing increasingly restless and frustrated, as they are confined within until the case is resolved. This unique setting, housing a diverse array of characters including high-profile figures such as former first ladies and prime ministers, adds an extra layer of excitement to the unfolding events. Dressed in their finest attire, these powerful individuals find themselves trapped in the White House long into the night.

Why ‘Knives Out’ Fans Will Love It

It’s clear that the narrative of “The Residence” openly acknowledges its inspiration from the movie “Knives Out.” The dialogue directly references and pays tribute to this film. In one instance, a significant character explicitly says, “This isn’t like a Knives Out scenario,” but in reality, it is. One episode of the season is even titled “Knives Out.” (Spoiler alert: It truly is.)

Shondra Rhimes is responsible for popular TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, Bridgerton, and The Residence, and her unique style is also evident in The Residence. In a similar vein, her adaptation of Knives Out features a powerful female protagonist at the heart of the narrative, boasts an accomplished cast of familiar faces, satirizes political environments, and pokes fun at elitist perspectives.

Lovers of the movie “Knives Out” will enjoy the fast-moving plot, the clever twists, and the intriguing mystery that keeps audiences on their toes, constantly questioning and reconsidering their assumptions. In addition, viewers will find delight in attempting to spot subtle hints and assemble the puzzle in a similar manner as Blanc and Cupp do throughout the film.

In this streaming series, all eight episodes become available simultaneously, which allows the narrative to unfold gradually – a fitting approach given its expansive scope with numerous interconnected elements. Furthermore, the incorporation of contemporary scenes during a congressional hearing regarding the case adds depth and complexity to the storyline, thereby enhancing the overall intrigue and creativity of the show, titled “The Residence“.

Although it can be somewhat aggravating to stretch out the enigma across eight lengthy episodes instead of condensing it into two hours like a movie, “The Residence” retains the same puzzling ambiance reminiscent of a whodunit game similar to “Clue”, much like “Knives Out”. Just as that film leaves viewers speculating about the identity of the suspect in the library or the dining room with a revolver or a knife, this series will keep audiences guessing. Moreover, it will intrigue viewers by revealing how Cupp arrives at her conclusion and ultimately solves the case using her unique methods.
