For more than a dozen years now, my spouse and I have shared two passions that bond us deeply: our passionate affection for each other and our mutual love for cinema. Whether they’re blockbusters or indies, comedies or dramas, we’ve enjoyed them all side by side. So, upon learning that Celine Song’s new film, Materialists, was set to premiere in 2025, we arranged for a babysitter and headed off to our local cinema.
Initially, I went in expecting greatness since critics raved about this romantic comedy (even TopMob’s Riley Utley gave it five stars) and featured actors like Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal in a captivating love triangle. As anticipated, we found the film to be exceptional, but an especially poignant scene during the closing credits of Materialists, with its hauntingly specific song, stirred up a deeply emotional and personal experience for my wife and me that we’ll always remember…
Materialists’ End Credits Scene Is Charming And Incredibly Unique
Among the numerous remarkable non-MCU end credit scenes I’ve encountered throughout the years, the one that unfolds during the credits of “Materialists” ranks incredibly high, if not at the very pinnacle.
In a bustling New York City courthouse, a stationary security camera captures Lucy (Dakota Johnson) and John (Chris Evans) among a crowd of others, exchanging vows. This quaint and distinctive depiction of their wedding is endearing and fitting for their unconventional love story. Celine Song, the writer and director, could have opted for a more intimate and tailored wedding scene, but this public setting beautifully encapsulates the unusual nature of their romance.

But Then John Prine’s ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ Started Playing
As I believed the moment couldn’t get any more perfect, the enchanting start of John Prine and Iris Dement’s 1999 duet, “In Spite of Ourselves,” filled the airwaves. Standing close to the theater exit, my wife and I found ourselves in each other’s arms, tears streaming down our faces, and giggling as the song about a couple who love each other despite their peculiarities and flaws played on, coinciding with Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson’s characters leaving the screen.
Currently, I find myself chuckling and tearing up while narrating an incident that, astonishingly, occurred just a few days ago but has already climbed to the top of my list as one of my cherished and deeply personal encounters with my spouse.

This Song, Which Perfectly Sums Up The Movie, Has Become Our Anthem In Recent Years
The timeless melody, with a refrain of “Despite us, we’ll find ourselves perched on a rainbow; defying odds, darling, we’re the grand jackpot,” encapsulates the essence of Materialists. Despite understanding that their relationship lacks financial or psychological sense, Lucy and John, with hearts as big as oceans, disregard prudence, their eyes twinkling with dance.
Over the past few years, “In Spite of Ourselves” has taken on a special significance for my wife and me. This song serves as our reminder of what truly matters when we find ourselves overwhelmed by life’s complications, confusion, and turmoil. I often remind her that “Darling, we are the grand prize.
In essence, the lesson here seems to encourage us to wait until the end of a production, be it a movie, book, or any creative work. It’s about acknowledging and appreciating the effort poured in by numerous individuals behind the scenes, who have collectively contributed to something remarkable. Additionally, waiting till the end might reward you with an enriching experience that concludes the narrative.
