As a longtime fan of both the Venom comics and the films, I must say I was quite surprised to see Michelle Williams’ character Anne Weying missing from Venom: The Last Dance. Given her central role in the first two films, it felt like something was left unfinished.
On October 25th, 2024, the movie “Venom: The Last Dance” dominated the box office, leaving fans both passionate and casual curious about the absence of Michelle Williams from the final installment of the franchise. Having played the role of Eddie Brock’s former fiancé and lawyer Anne Weying in previous films, it was unexpected that Williams would leave the Sony superhero series before its conclusion. This led to Juno Temple being cast as Dr. Teddy Paine instead.
Despite some harsh criticism towards “The Last Dance”, numerous audiences rushed to watch the last “Venom” film, providing a humorous finale to the deadly alien symbiote’s journey in the Sony Spider-Man Universe. As Peter Parker moves forward into the next chapter of the Spider-Man Universe, insights into Anne Weying’s fate and Michelle Williams’ departure from the franchise could offer fans a sense of resolution.
What Is Venom: The Last Dance About?
As the concluding chapter of the Venom trilogy, The Last Dance sees Eddie Brock (Hardy) evading capture in Mexico alongside the Alien Symbiote after their encounter with Carnage. Following accusations for Patrick Mulligan’s (Stephen Graham) death, Brock must restore his reputation in New York City. In the bustling metropolis of The Big Apple, however, both Brock and Venom find themselves pursued by a Xenophage dispatched by Knull (Andy Serkis), the symbiote’s creator, to recover a Codex that could grant Knull his freedom from imprisonment.
In the sequence, military commander Rex Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor) keeps tabs on a covert operation known as Imperium. This operation, stationed at Area 51, captures and studies symbiotes. The scientists involved, Teddy Payne (Juno Temple) and Sadie Christmas (Clark Backo), carry out Strickland’s instructions. Meanwhile, Strickland traces the whereabouts of Brock and Venom to Las Vegas. In the course of the superhero movie trilogy, they encounter Martian Moon (Rhys Ifans), an eccentric space-age hippie and alien follower, who aids them in their escape.
In the pulsating heart of Sin City’s dazzling casinos, the Xenophage ramps up its ruthless, action-packed pursuit of Brock and Venom. Amidst this chaotic chase, I find myself in a moment of selflessness, a heroic sacrifice that demands to be witnessed to truly appreciate its raw emotional intensity. Despite the mixed reactions to my noble act, the conspicuous absence of Dr. Anne Weying (Michelle Williams) and her fiancé, Dan Lewis (Reid Scott), leaves fans scratching their heads, wondering about the whereabouts of these crucial characters.
How Michelle Willliams’ Anne Weying Informed Venom & Venom 2
Michelle Williams played the role of Anne Weying in both Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Anne, a lawyer, was once engaged to Eddie Brock, but their relationship ended when Brock disrupted her job interview and caused her to lose it. Subsequently, Anne started dating Dr. Dan Lews (Scott). However, things took an unexpected turn when Anne got infected by the alien symbiote and transformed into She-Venom due to this inescapable connection with Venom.
Following her rescue of Brock from the Life Foundation, Anne finds a new chapter in her life as she accepts Dan Lewis’ proposal, leaving Brock feeling displeased. However, their friendship remains unchanged, and Anne’s role expands when she and Dan assist Brock and Venom in escaping Mulligan. This leads to them being captured by Cletus Kasady, also known as Carnage (Woody Harrelson), and Frances Barrison, aka Shriek (Naomie Harris). It is at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco that Frances and Cletus intend to wed, with Frances taking Anne along.
At Cletus and Frances’ wedding ceremony, Brock and Venom unexpectedly show up and cause a ruckus. In the ensuing chaos, Frances chokes Mulligan with a chain and manages to separate Venom and Carnage. Eventually, in an epic battle, Venom and Brock defeat Carnage (alongside Kasady) before escaping to Mexico. Before eluding the authorities, Brock says goodbye to Anne Weying and Dan Lewis, and that is the last time Michelle Williams appears in the Venom trilogy.
Why Michelle Williams Isn’t in Venom: The Last Dance
When viewers tuned in for the last Venom film and noticed Michelle Williams was missing, many speculated about Anne Weying’s whereabouts. The Hollywood Reporter questioned director Kelly Marcel about Williams’ absence, suggesting it might be related to the movie’s road trip aspect. However, Marcel explained that there was a deeper reason behind her absence, hinting:
Our goal was to remove them from their familiar surroundings and loved ones, leaving only one another for support. This way, we aimed to help them bond strongly and make a commitment to become the Lethal Protectors, embarking on this adventure side by side.
Besides intentionally keeping Brock apart from Weying in “The Last Dance,” Marcel observed that this choice enhances the dramatic narrative, stating it as follows: This move significantly contributes to the engaging storyline.
Consequently, it’s perilous for them to be together, as their presence puts the world in jeopardy. They eventually realize that their chosen path leads to their own demise. As a result, most of the characters from past films, except for Peggy Lu’s Mrs. Chen, were not suited for this road trip narrative.
In “The Last Dance,” Reid Scott lends his voice to a new character, the Imperium leader, even though Michelle Williams, who portrayed Anne Weying in the first two Venom films, is not present in this movie. However, neither Anne Weying nor Dan Lewis, another character played by Scott, are featured in “The Last Dance.” Despite Michelle Williams’ absence from “Venom: The Last Dance” being a conscious narrative decision, she will portray Peggy Lee in Todd Haynes’ biopic “Fever” and reappear on TV in “Dying for Sex.
