In the last five to six years, the streaming community has been abuzz with speculation over the potential return of “Mindhunter”, a popular Netflix series. You might remember that the third season was paused in late 2019, shortly after David Fincher’s show based on the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit concluded its second season. After numerous disappointing updates, fans experienced a spark of optimism in June 2025 when one of the series’ actors shared an encouraging piece of news.
Despite my usual optimism and deep affection for the show “Mindhunter”, I must confess that I find it hard to believe fresh episodes will surface on Netflix anytime soon. Here’s why I’m not as hopeful:
Holt McCallany Has Said There’s A Chance Mindhunter Comes Back As Three Movies
In June 2025, Holt McCallany, star of Mindhunter, shared with CBR that he had a recent meeting with David Fincher, the acclaimed director and unofficial showrunner of the popular Netflix series. Fincher expressed optimism that the story might continue a few years after Netflix ended it, offering hope for its completion.
Could we possibly expect McCallany’s Bill Tench, Jonathan Groff’s Holden Ford, and Anna Torv’s Wendy Carr’s story to reach a conclusion soon, following the long wait of six years? That might not be exactly accurate. Instead, the actor clarified that Fincher intends to split the story into three, two-hour films. However, McCallany didn’t seem overly confident about the project, as Fincher would need to approve and like any future scripts.

But Even So, There Are So Many Factors Involved With Bringing It Back
I’m just as eager for more “Mindhunter” as anyone else, but there are numerous elements at play that make me hesitant. Even if scripts for the three supposed films are being written, Fincher needs to approve them first. Given that he’s involved with a spinoff of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” featuring Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth on Netflix, it seems like the renowned director will be quite busy for an extended period.
In simpler terms, coordinating all the actors’ hectic schedules adds to the challenge, but what really makes things tough is the uncertainty about whether Netflix is keen on producing more seasons of Mindhunter. You might expect that if they were eager for more episodes, we would have seen them by now. Nevertheless, it’s possible I could be mistaken in this assumption.

Don’t Get Me Wrong, I’ll Be There Day One For More Mindhunter
Perhaps “Mindhunter” might reappear as a trilogy of films, offering closure for the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit and the real-life serial killers featured in the show. If this happens, and I’m optimistic despite previous indications that it won’t, I’ll be ready on opening day to witness its new format. I’m just not getting my hopes too high.
No matter what transpires, it’s simply delightful to know that “Mindhunter” is still around and consistently ranks among the top crime series of the 21st century, and potentially one of the greatest TV shows ever produced.
