The 2024 film “The Apprentice” focused on Donald Trump’s rise to power in the ’80s.
The project gained a tremendous amount of free publicity from various media outlets, received two Academy Award nominations, and faced criticism from the Trump administration.
Due to all the promotion, the movie earned only $17 million worldwide and a disappointing $4 million in the U.S. In other words, it was a flop at the box office.
Now, a film producer wants to revisit Trump’s life.
Andria Iervolino, associated with Ferrari, intends to portray a broader perspective of Donald Trump’s life in a proposed project valued at $100 million, as reported by Deadline. This upcoming portrayal is expected to be less critical compared to the harsh portrayal presented last year by director Ali Abbasi.
The project described by Andrea Iervolino’s company is a significant biographical film focusing on the life and impact of Donald J. Trump, who is known for his real estate empire, television career, and service as the 45th and potential future 47th President of the United States. It remains uncertain whether Iervolino has contacted Trump’s team about the project.
It was shown last year that the general audience seems uninterested in a biographical film about Trump. Given how frequently he is making headlines these days, it could be that this lack of interest has only grown stronger.
The timing couldn’t be worse for several reasons.
From my perspective, the impact of Trump’s administration is unfolding before our eyes, making it quite a challenge for any film to accurately portray it. Any movie that presents even a mildly favorable view of Trump would likely face sharp criticism from the entertainment media. Likewise, die-hard MAGA supporters might find any Hollywood depiction of their beloved president questionable.
The pool of potential customers seems small from the jump.
A substantial budget like that will need a significant amount of ticket sales to turn a profit, and it seems quite challenging to achieve this goal. Regardless of how excellent or noble the film might be, this obstacle appears too high to overcome. For instance, Dinesh D’Souza’s film “Vindicating Trump” managed only modest box office earnings last year – approximately $1.3 million within the U.S. alone.
A strategic approach for depicting President Trump on screen, which is crucial at some point, is to bide our time and wait a few years. This allows the intense emotions surrounding his presidency to subside, just as we saw with the remarkable Vietnam War films that emerged approximately a decade following the conflict’s end.
- “Platoon”
- “Full Metal Jacket”
- “Hamburger Hill”
- “Good Morning, Vietnam!”
To craft an outstanding Trump biopic, storytellers should take the necessary time to reflect on the conflicts and detach some, but not all, of their personal emotions from the creative process. This method will yield the most effective and balanced portrayal.
Attempting it now seems like a terrible choice.
