Following numerous months, or perhaps even years, of whispers, followed by several weeks filled with enigmatic promotional packages, and an electrifying debut that stood out among many others in recent memory, Penta made his appearance on the second episode of Raw on Netflix. I believe that this globetrotting luchador may be the key to addressing a long-standing issue that has been troubling WWE for years. Over the course of time, WWE has attempted and ultimately failed on numerous occasions to cultivate the next great luchador, with the intention of eventually passing the torch to them once Rey Mysterio, one of the most influential Hispanic wrestlers in history, decides to retire.
However, I’m not convinced that won’t be an issue as we progress. Unlike Sin Cara (both versions), Kalisto, and other luchadors who have been introduced before him, Penta’s narrative is likely to unfold in a completely different manner. Here are several factors supporting this assertion:
1. His well-known character and catchphrase (his history speaks volumes).
2. The rapport he has built with the audience.
3. The fact that he’s wrestling during a new era of WWE.
4. Other unique aspects that set him apart from his predecessors.
Let me elaborate on each point…
First Off, Penta Already Has An Established Brand And His Great ‘Cero Miedo’ Catchphrase
In May 2017, I witnessed Penta, then known as Penta El Cero Miedo, grapple at an American Legion Hall in southern Illinois. It was undoubtedly one of the most thrilling matches I’ve ever seen live. The crowd echoed with “Cero Miedo” chants for him even before he stepped into the ring, and I recall thinking how eager I was to see this man perform in WWE. It wasn’t a question of if, but rather when for this charming and incredibly gifted wrestler.
I make this statement because, throughout his career under various names like Penta, Pentagon Jr., or Penta Dark, he’s built a strong, instantly recognizable brand with an incredibly cool image. This man exudes charisma in a way that captures fans’ attention. Plus, the potential for massive crowds at basketball arenas and football stadiums to shout “Cero Miedo” adds fuel to the fire of success.
He Had An Instant Connection With The Crowd Before He Even Stepped Into The Ring, Which Is Wild
2025’s second Raw had many delightful aspects, yet what stands out most in my mind is Penta’s grand entrance. Ever since I witnessed Pentagon Jr.’s electrifying performances on Lucha Underground, where he squared off against WWE stars like Rey Mysterio, Iyo Sky, and Chelsea Green, I had been eagerly anticipating this moment. It seemed that I was not alone in my excitement, as the enthusiastic crowd in San Jose, California, reveled in Penta’s debut. In fact, they were absolutely thrilled watching Penta shake off some ring rust against Chad Gable.
Before Penta even entered the ring, the audience was already captivated by him. The excitement only grew from there, with the match and his post-match speech serving to deepen that bond. If this connection persists and the crowd remains entranced by him, he could well become not just one of the greatest WWE luchador stars in history, but a legendary figure in the wrestling industry as a whole.
So Many Other Luchadors Have Felt Like WWE Was Trying To Find The Next Rey Mysterio, But Penta Has A Unique Look
Despite Mil Máscaras briefly wrestling for WWE earlier in its history, Rey Mysterio is arguably the most popular luchador among younger fans. For quite some time, it seems as though WWE has been seeking a successor to Mysterio, with numerous wrestlers appearing to emulate his character, appearance, and move set in some way.
Experiencing Penta in the wrestling world is unlike anything else. While he shares some similarities with other wrestlers due to his theatrics and mask, he stands out significantly. His distinctive appearance, which is subject to frequent changes, and unconventional moveset set him apart from others. Even seasoned critics like Jim Cornette might find themselves bewildered by Penta’s moves that go beyond traditional high-flying stunts and technical wrestling. The combination of his mask, face paint, ninja-like attire, and intense physicality makes him feel like a fresh, innovative entity in the world of wrestling.
Triple H Is In Charge, And It Seems Like He’s Fully Committed To Making Penta A Megastar
Do you recall when Sin Cara made his WWE debut around 2011, following a long-awaited buildup? There were captivating promos, he had an appealing appearance, a catchy name, and some impressive moves. However, the excitement seemed to fade quickly after its commencement, due to several factors. The mishap during his initial entrance, the enigmatic stage lighting, and the peculiar feud between two distinct Sin Cara characters that surfaced post the first masked wrestler’s suspension and reinstatement were among these factors.
Fortunately, Penta’s Raw debut didn’t involve any mishaps, and I believe this is due to Triple H, who currently heads creative, being dedicated to transforming him not just into a well-liked performer but a superstar. The enigmatic promo videos, the competitive debut against skilled wrestler Chad Gable rather than a one-sided match, and the post-match interview all indicate that the company is investing both resources and trust in its latest rising star. This fills me with great anticipation.
But Wait Until His Brother, Rey Fenix, Comes To WWE
The duo commonly referred to as the Lucho Bros, composed of Penta and Rey Fenix (who are actual brothers), have been renowned as one of the top tag teams across various wrestling promotions they’ve worked together in throughout their careers. With Rey’s eventual arrival at WWE on the horizon, we might witness even greater things from the company’s newest rising star.
They might choose to extend their legacy as skilled and dynamic tag team wrestlers, or they could reignite their long-standing rivalry that has spanned various promotions worldwide. When they’re part of a narrative, whether as partners or adversaries, these two always give it their all, making it an exciting spectacle. I can barely contain my excitement thinking about the possible matchups such as Lucho Bros versus the Usos, the new Bloodline, the New Day, and many more.
I’m excited about the fresh chapter in WWE history as Penta joins the roster. I can hardly contain my anticipation for his future endeavors within the company. While the road ahead is unpredictable, I’ll definitely be tuning into Raw each week with my Netflix subscription and staying subscribed to Peacock for all the upcoming WWE events.
