However, it’s worth noting that despite this emotional throwback, Roseanne herself didn’t make a physical appearance in the series finale’s flashback scene.

Roseanne Is Noticeably Left Out

In the main series, Dan, Becky, Darlene, and Jackie are all prominently involved, yet Roseanne is mysteriously absent. Interestingly, even DJ makes a small appearance, despite Michael Fishman not rejoining the cast for The Conners season 7. It’s a curious decision, as one might expect the show to include the character of Roseanne, the family matriarch, but this doesn’t occur.

Why The Conners Couldn’t Use Any Footage Of Roseanne

It’s All Because Of Barr’s Stipulation

In the final episode of The Conners, Roseanne was absent from all flashback scenes, and this wasn’t due to a creative decision as some might think. After the series finale, executive producers Dave Caplan and Bruce Helford clarified in an interview with Deadline that they were unable to use any footage of Roseanne Barr because of legal restrictions. The actress’s departure from the sitcom was highly contentious, and one of her conditions at the time was that The Conners wouldn’t use her likeness. Here’s a quote from the producers:

HELFORD:She generously agreed to let us carry on with the series since she held some influence over the decision. Once she understood that canceling the initial reboot would mean job loss for around 300 people, she gracefully consented to continue without her involvement. Ultimately, it was about these individuals. The show primarily revolves around the lives of the Conner family members, and we chose to emphasize their stories.

As a devoted fan of The Conners, I’ve noticed something peculiar about their beloved Lanford home – there’s no clear picture of Roseanne in the living room, despite the presence of framed photos elsewhere. However, even though the off-screen events may be unclear, the show has found a way to honor the actor and her iconic character by acknowledging her significant contributions to the sitcom through its final storyline.
