In a fresh twist, the ninth season of “Scrubs,” renamed as “Scrubs: Med School,” introduced some significant changes compared to its initial sitcom phase, yet it began quite misleadingly. Spanning nine seasons from 2001 to 2010, “Scrubs” is set for a comeback, with Zach Braff reprising his role as Dr. John “JD” Dorian. This revival of the medical dramedy presents an opportunity to rectify its downfall before “Med School” and clarify from the outset what new direction it will take.
The TV show “Scrubs: Med School” introduced a fresh main cast while gradually phasing out the original stars. Notable exceptions included Judy Reyes’ Carla and Neil Flynn’s Janitor. The narrative shifted towards a new set of interns, and it was planned that the series would feature a constantly changing cast like “E.R.” Unfortunately, this concept didn’t succeed and the show concluded after only 13 episodes, with its first episode now appearing rather deceptive in hindsight.
Scrubs: Med School Never Got Any Better Than Its First Episode
“Our First Day of School” almost fooled everyone into thinking Med School wouldn’t change much
Med School, and the quality started declining significantly from thereon.
In the eighth episode of season 9, titled “Our Couples,” Scrubs ranks just above the bottom on IMDb with a rating of 5.9 out of 10. By episode 9, Med School had found its stride in terms of its identity. Much of the charm that was rekindled in “Our First Day of School” faded away, and it became evident that Scrubs: Med School could never truly match the brilliance of seasons 1-8.
Why Scrubs Season 9 Never Topped “Our First Day Of School”
Med School began by treading (kind of) closely in the footsteps of Scrubs seasons 1-8
From my perspective as a loyal fan, I must say that the ninth season of “Scrubs” felt remarkably distinct from the first eight. The setting shifted to a revamped Sacred Heart Hospital, and an array of fresh faces joined our beloved characters. Not only did the visual style undergo a noticeable change, but the dynamic within the show was also significantly altered.
However, despite these changes, there were still familiar elements that resonated deeply. For instance, the premiere episode, “Our First Day of School,” remained heavily focused on Zach Braff’s JD character, with his narration duties not yet fully passed to Dr. Lucy Bennett (Kerry Bishé). Furthermore, it provided insights into how our original cast members had evolved since the season 8 finale.
In season 9, JD’s character was gradually written off from the TV series Scrubs, as creator/star Zach Braff was preparing to pursue other projects. Since JD played the central role on the show, his exit required introducing new characters to lead the storylines. Although viewers might have been eager to see the return of Scrubs with Med School, some may have felt intrigued or relieved, it proved challenging for the episode “Our First Day of School” to keep long-term fans engaged and convinced they should continue watching.

“My Long Farewell” | 6 | 15 | 9.0/10 |
Starting from episode 2, it grew increasingly clear that Scrubs wasn’t being continued as initially intended but rather reimagined. The old characters took a backseat while new ones began to take center stage. These new faces weren’t poor quality, but they couldn’t measure up to the cherished figures who had been at the heart of the show since 2001. “Our First Day of School” marked the start of this shift, making it more well-liked than subsequent episodes. However, with a rating of only 6.5/10, it’s clear that it fell short in several aspects.
There’s Only 1 Scrubs Episode Ranked Lower Than All Of Season 9
“My Night to Remember” offered very little to Scrubs
Regardless of Med School‘s unsuccessful run, an episode of Scrubs has a lower IMDb rating than any season 9 installment – this is due to a specific reason. The 11th episode of “Scrubs” Season 6, “My Night to Remember,” stands out as the show’s solitary clip show episode, which is predominantly composed of flashbacks to significant moments. While new content serves as a supporting structure, it doesn’t quite match up in terms of appeal. Consequently, it boasts an IMDb rating of 5.3/10 at present.
Clip show episodes seldom contribute to the main plot’s progression and are frequently overlooked and criticized. However, even though Season 9’s “Our Couples” was rated as the second-worst episode of Scrubs, it only managed a marginal lead over “My Night to Remember,” indicating how weak the quality of Med School could be. The worst pre-Med School episode after “My Night to Remember” is Scrubs Season 8, Episode 11, titled “My Nah Nah Nah,” which still received a decent rating of 7.5/10.
