In simple terms, Season 4 of “The Bear” on FX is almost here, allowing fans of this popular series to reconnect with characters like Carmy Berzatto, Sydney Adamu, Richie Jerimovich, and others at the featured restaurant. One reason the show has been a hit – and is a prominent title in the 2025 TV lineup – is its diverse cast of memorable characters. However, having such a strong ensemble can sometimes mean that not all characters get significant storylines, and I’m eagerly anticipating a shift for one character in particular.
One Of The Bear’s Veteran Characters Has Yet To Receive His Time In The Sun
Gary Woods, also known as Sweeps, has been part of the show “The Bear” since its premiere in 2022. Portrayed by Corey Hendrix, this character is recognized as a runner at the series’ namesake restaurant. Throughout Season 1, it’s revealed that his nickname, Sweeps, stems from his past in baseball. In his younger years, he played for the Chicago Cubs’ farm team. At this point, he was homeless. However, he did achieve some success, notably “sweeping St. Louis three times” and having a no-hitter.
In Season 3, we learn a significant aspect of Sweep’s minor league past: his career abruptly ended due to steroid use. It seems Gary unknowingly provided him with a prohibited substance. Concurrently, Sweeps advances professionally as the restaurant undergoes an upscale transformation and he is promoted to sommelier.
In the series “The Bear,” Hendrix does a commendable job of bringing his character to life whenever he gets screen time. Frankly, I believe he’s one of the undervalued cast members. The show seems to overlook Sweeps, and unfortunately, that’s a pity since characters like Tina and Marcus get ample opportunities to shine. Even recurring characters such as Teddy and “Uncle” Jimmy are given more to work with.
However, the writers of the show have planted some intriguing elements for Sweeps’ character development, and I find myself pondering how they could be utilized effectively. If given a chance, I would love to see these elements come to fruition, as it would not only benefit Hendrix’s performance but also enrich the overall storyline of the show.

How Could The Bear Better Utilize Sweeps During Season 4 (And Possibly Beyond)?

Critics often criticize the bear for repeatedly winning Comedy Emmys, but according to one TV expert, perhaps we should be pointing the finger at “Lost” instead.
At a fundamental level, it’s appealing to me to grant Sweeps more autonomy within the restaurant setting. Throughout the series, we observe numerous characters proposing distinct strategies to keep the business thriving. These ideas often stem from the team members’ individual backgrounds (like Carmy’s culinary education and Richie’s tenure at Ever). Considering his past as an athlete, I’d be thrilled if Sweeps could apply that experience to develop a concept or philosophy that his peers can adopt.
It would be fantastic if an entire episode focused on Gary was created, similar to episodes like “Forks” and “Napkins,” which focus on individual characters and have received positive reviews. This could be a standalone episode set in the past or present, although it’s unlikely that will happen during Sweeps. However, since we saw a brief glimpse of Gary in a batting cage in Season 4’s official trailer, there’s a chance his moment to shine might come. We can only hope and wait for future developments.

Absolutely! As a fellow streamer, I’d like to highlight an exciting offer: for only $10.99 monthly, you can enjoy both Disney Plus and Hulu in one convenient bundle. For a slightly higher cost of $19.99 per month, you can opt for the ad-free version. This streaming package grants you endless access to all seasons of shows like “The Bear” and other top-tier FX originals. Don’t miss out on this deal!
As the new season rapidly nears, it’s crucial to consider many factors. Now that “The Bear” has an official schedule, the staff must strive for profitability to prevent closure. With series creator Christopher Storer and his crew at the helm, they’ll have to up their game, particularly since some fans felt Season 3 (even its finale) fell short of expectations. Here’s hoping that just like the show’s characters, this creative team will rise to the occasion and provide Sweeps with more engaging storylines in the process.
Get ready! The full fourth season of “The Bear” will be available for streaming on June 25th. Make sure you’ve got your Hulu subscription all set up so you can catch it as soon as it drops. To fully immerse yourself in the story, I’d recommend watching at least the third season first – it’s a gripping binge that might leave you breathless!
