As a die-hard Marvel fan who grew up watching the Fantastic Four comics and cartoons, I must admit that my excitement for their live-action return is at an all-time high. Having seen my fair share of comic book adaptations, I’ve learned to expect a bit of controversy when it comes to costumes, especially with a team as iconic as the Fantastic Four.
After the excitement surrounding “Deadpool & Wolverine” appears to have rejuvenated the anticipation for upcoming Marvel Studios projects, there seems to be a greater focus on what’s to come compared to recently. However, this increased attention also brings about disagreements among fans, particularly regarding Marvel’s original family, the Fantastic Four, and their fresh live-action costumes.
At D23, a repeat showing of the “The Fantastic Four: The First Steps” teaser that originally premiered at Comic-Con in Hall H took place. Consequently, unauthorized recordings of this preview started circulating online more frequently. While the appearance of Ralph Ineson’s Galactus was an exciting aspect, many viewers paid particular attention to a clear image of Johnny Storm, who seemed to be wearing the team’s superhero outfits according to some reports (@F4Updates). However, not everyone found these costumes to be amazing.
The image most frequently discussed was that of the Human Torch. In this depiction, he’s dressed in a blue and white suit, with a large ‘4’ emblazoned on his chest, causing fans to speculate that this could be the team’s primary superhero uniform. On social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), some fans expressed dissatisfaction with the color scheme. User @Etanibrut commented, “I personally find too much white. The sleeves detract from the suit; it would have looked so much better if it were entirely blue.” Another user, @iamwaynehunnid, stated, “Honestly, I don’t care for the suit. Why not stick with the traditional design instead?” However, those who appreciate the modern attire have justified it, emphasizing that it reflects the era and, most significantly, is a departure from our familiar appearance.
Fantastic Four fans defend Johnny’s ’60s style
Instead of every poster expressing their discontent using shaky phone footage and tears, others have promptly advised them to dry their eyes, as many complaints seem centered around the characters being set in an era long past. NeoGodGoku commented, “I must admit, I’m quite fond of this costume. They’re aiming for a 60s retro feel, and they’re nailing it perfectly. Joseph Quinn is destined to be an excellent Human Torch. Keep watching!” Given the circumstances, the burden may fall more heavily on Quinn than most, considering fans have just been reminded of the last actor to play the Torch, Chris Evans, who recently reappeared in a cameo for “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
As a fan myself, I must admit that initially, my reaction to the new design was less than favorable. However, upon further reflection, I can see how it aligns with the visual style I envision for the upcoming film and bears a striking resemblance to Johnny. So, despite my initial reservations, I’m now on board with it. All I can say is, I hope they introduce more MCU-esque outfits in the future. As for @TravBryanMusic, he’s hoping these suits make their way to our world. While I can’t predict the future, I have a feeling we might see further evolutions of the team’s uniforms down the line.
We might see more than one fit in Fantastic Four
It’s undeniable that during the groovy ’60s, the Fantastic Four were delving into science, and this is reflected in their space suits, which embody the aesthetic of sci-fi classics like “2001: A Space Odyssey” or “Star Trek.” The blue color of their suits even mirrors Dr. McCoy’s (DeForest Kelly) uniform from the original Star Trek series. The stunning concept art unveiled on Valentine’s Day, along with leaked designs since then, suggests that “The Fantastic Four: The First Steps” may draw parallels with the initial appearances of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), and Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in their respective films, hinting at multiple costume designs.
Essentially, the costumes we initially observe the characters wearing after being exposed to cosmic rays might not be their final ones by the end of the movie. Furthermore, their costumes could undergo another change when they eventually enter the main Marvel Cinematic Universe and interact with other heroes. However, it’s crucial to note that the costume itself doesn’t define the character; rather, it’s the person inside who truly matters. We’ll get a glimpse of them all together when “The Fantastic Four: The First Steps” hits theaters on July 25, 2025.
