If you haven’t met David Corenswet yet, who played “Superman”, get ready as he might be appearing more frequently. The initial reviews for “Superman” all seem to agree on something, and it looks like Corenswet will likely don the famous red-and-blue costume for quite some time. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2019, the actor himself expressed his dream of playing Superman, saying, “My ultimate aspiration is definitely to portray Superman.
When Corenswet expressed his ambitious aspiration, he had already spent several years acting. His career in television began during the 2010s, with his debut as one-half of a comedy duo on the series “Moe and Jerryweather.” The same year that Corenswet conversed with EW, he embarked upon a successful stint portraying River Barkley in “The Politician.” The 2020s brought Corenswet iconic roles, which likely caught your attention when you first sat down to watch “Superman.
In the opening act of the last ten years, Corenswet made his mark with his portrayal of Jack Castello in Ryan Murphy’s miniseries “Hollywood.” Subsequently, he collaborated with Jon Bernthal in the HBO miniseries “We Own This City” two years later. His journey continued as he took on a role in Ti West’s and Mia Goth’s production titled “Pearl,” playing a questionable projectionist. Riding this wave of momentum, Corenswet found himself auditioning for the coveted role of Superman in 2023, impressing James Gunn and Peter Safran from DC Studios, ultimately securing the part as their iconic superhero.
David Corenswet was the clear frontrunner for Superman
The search for a fresh actor to portray Superman has proven quite challenging, given the numerous live-action adaptations in the past. James Gunn, in particular, scrutinized hundreds of actors for the role, but David Corenswet quickly emerged as a strong contender during auditions. As Gunn stated in an interview with GQ, “Right from the start, he was the one to beat, if I’m being honest.” It is possible that Gunn sensed the determination and drive that Corenswet had been cultivating for years, dating back to his 2019 statement expressing his desire to play Superman, the last son of Krypton.
In the summer of 2023, it was announced that Corenswet had been cast in a significant role as Superman. At the time, he was busy filming for “Twisters,” and his colleagues congratulated him on social media. However, “Twisters” wasn’t the only major production that Corenswet worked on between landing the Superman part and the release of the film. In 2024, he also appeared in the Hulu movie “The Greatest Hits” and had a guest role in the Apple TV miniseries “Lady in the Lake.” Although this will be Corenswet’s first time as the leading man in a movie, if you want to find out why the future of the DCU looks promising, take a look at our review of “Superman.
