Why The Coco Attraction Is The Upcoming Disney California Adventure Update I'm Most Curious About

As an avid Disney Parks enthusiast who’s grown up with countless memories of these magical lands, I must say I was absolutely thrilled to hear about the upcoming Coco-themed attraction for Disney California Adventure! It’s high time that such a delightful and heartfelt film like Coco received more attention within the parks.

Fans of Disney Parks were thrilled with the latest updates shared during the D23 Ultimate Fan Event in Anaheim, California. A significant portion of the announcements centered around enhancing and expanding the four parks at Walt Disney World to keep pace with Universal Studios’ Epic Universe. However, Disney’s California Adventure didn’t get left behind; it was revealed that the park will soon be home to a brand-new attraction inspired by the movie “Coco.”

It’s long overdue that the exceptional Pixar film, Coco, receives more recognition in Disney’s parks. So far, it has only had sporadic appearances with Miguel and occasional themed dishes during holidays. This lack of attention is not surprising given the response from those who attended the Horizons: Disney Experience Showcase, including myself, when the concept art for the attraction was unveiled – a moment met with thunderous cheers and applause. The reveal piqued my curiosity, as I was both thrilled by the prospect and intrigued by the mystery surrounding the project’s specifics.

I’m Excited For A Coco Attraction, But I Have Some Questions

Josh D’Amaro, head of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, announced exciting news at a packed Honda Center, which also featured a live performance by the film antagonist Ernesto de la Cruz. The audience was given a sneak peek of concept art depicting theme park visitors sailing in a marigold-adorned boat through the Land of the Dead. Throughout this journey, attendees can expect to enjoy music from the movie and encounter beloved characters such as Miguel and even Dante in his alebrije form.

Even though the announcement was thrilling, I must admit that my initial excitement has faded, leaving me with more questions than I had answers to begin with. For instance, I’m eager to discover whether the ride will follow the plot of the movie, similar to Epcot’s Frozen Ever After attraction, or if Imagineers will create a fresh storyline for it, as they did with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

I’m curious too about where the new ride will be situated. It seems plausible that it might take over Goofy’s Sky School, one of Disney California Adventure’s least popular rides, located on the western side of the park. This hypothesis aligns with the fact that Paradise Gardens often gets themed for the movie Coco during festive seasons. The area could certainly benefit from a facelift, and this new ride could be just what it needs.

It’s plausible that the appeal in question could be linked to Disneyland’s upcoming project, the Disneyland Forward, which has received approval from the Anaheim City Council. Interestingly, this extensive expansion plan wasn’t highlighted during the park’s recent presentation, possibly explaining why a specific location for the “Coco” ride hasn’t been revealed yet.

Coco Isn’t The Only New Attraction Coming To DCA

Although Disneyland might have missed out on recent announcements, its counterpart is set to receive some exciting updates. Initially conceived as a unique experience, we can now confirm that DCA (Disney California Adventure) is receiving a fully-fledged Avatar land, transporting visitors to a new Pandora location. This new area will feature at least one novel attraction – a boat voyage, with Disney enthusiasts speculating it will employ the same technology as Shanghai Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Regrettably, neither the start date nor the precise location have been disclosed yet, suggesting that this might be part of the Disneyland Forward project.

Moreover, there are now two additional rides at the Avengers Campus. Fans have finally discovered what was hidden inside the building that has remained vacant since its opening in 2021, fulfilling the dreams of every Marvel enthusiast. The Avengers Infinity Defense experience will give fans the opportunity to traverse different worlds and join forces with the superhero team to defeat King Thanos.

Immediately beside us, visitors can check out Stark Flight Lab – an exciting new attraction where they’ll join Tony in testing out his latest superhero gadgets. Riders will hop into two-person capsules before being spun around by a robotic arm. The most thrilling aspect is that every ride varies as each capsule interacts with a distinct Marvel superhero.

As a dedicated gamer and local of Anaheim, I have to admit it’s a bit disappointing that we won’t be able to enjoy the new attractions at Disney’s California Adventure anytime soon. However, as a true fan of Disney, I’m heartened to see The Mouse House investing in its future. In the meantime, I can still immerse myself in the magical world of Coco by streaming it on Disney Plus.
