Why The Conners Turned Johnny Galecki’s David Into A Deadbeat Dad

Warning: Contains plot details for “The Conners” Season 7, Episode 5 titled “Exercise Bands, Money Plans, and Faraway Lands” may reveal key aspects of the storyline. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

I’m really disappointed, fellow “The Conners” fans, as we didn’t get the delightful surprise of seeing Johnny Galecki’s character David Healy in the final episode. His absence has left quite an emptiness since his Season 2 appearance, and even though he was mentioned briefly in the series finale, it wasn’t a warm or uplifting reference. To make matters worse, over the course of Seasons 3 to 7, David’s character evolved into a self-absorbed scoundrel and an irresponsible father.

As stated by the showrunner and executive producer Bruce Helford, the writers were compelled to write off Johnny Galecki’s character due to his unwillingness to continue with the series. According to Helford, who spoke to Deadline, “He genuinely didn’t want to carry on with it anymore,” despite the fact that there was mutual affection between him and the rest of the team. They had a close relationship, but his absence presented a challenge: how could they write off this character without causing harm? Ultimately, they chose to have his character depart, which unfortunately left his character’s reputation somewhat damaged. Since Galecki has been largely absent from the public eye since “The Big Bang Theory” concluded, this explanation seems plausible.

In the episode titled “Exercise Bands, Money Plans and Faraway Lands,” Darlene (Sara Gilbert) reinforces David’s image as an uninvolved father when she candidly tells her son Mark (Ames McNamara), “I was terrified growing up poor without a dad.” This revelation has left many viewers, who remember a more compassionate David from earlier seasons, feeling dissatisfied and vocal about these character changes.

Fans hate David’s deadbeat status

Supporters of “Roseanne” and its spinoff, “The Conners,” have consistently found it hard to accept David’s character transformation into an absent father. As u/stpony expressed on the “The Conners” subreddit, they believe that David wouldn’t have deserted Darlene, Harris, and Mark. Instead, they think he would have sacrificed himself before leaving them. On a different note, u/SamEdenRose proposed alternative scenarios for David’s actions, suggesting that perhaps he could have been serving in the Peace Corps or something similar, which would explain why he was absent but not estranged from his children, avoiding the label of being a deadbeat dad who doesn’t maintain contact with them.

Many fans suspect that David’s current character might be shaped by his past experiences and the passage of time. Some argue that he has always been flawed, going as far back as his days on “Roseanne.” For instance, u/cbatta2025 stated that David was unambitious, lived off Darlene during her college years, had no job or plans for higher education, and held both Darlene’s sister Becky (Lecy Goranson) and his brother Mark (Glenn Quinn) back from reaching their full potential. Since “The Conners” has wrapped up production, it seems unlikely that David will ever have a chance to change. However, fans remain optimistic that a future spin-off may provide him with another opportunity for redemption.
