I’m quite fond of the “Final Destination” film series. I wouldn’t go so far as to call them cinematic masterpieces, but they’re not exactly guilty pleasures either. They can be quite gruesome and sometimes absurd, and may not appeal to everyone. However, I appreciate the idea that Death is pursuing the lives it’s owed after a group of individuals cheat death by avoiding a foretold disaster. With “Bloodlines” being one of the new horror movies released this year, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to rewatch the original films.
Among the Final Destination films, I’m a big fan of all but the fourth one. Having taken advantage of my Max subscription to rewatch the earlier Final Destination movies before Bloodlines, I must concede that the 2009 film, known as The Final Destination, has a particularly impressive title sequence to its credit.
What Happens In The Final Destination Title Sequence
If you’re a bit hazy on the opening credits of “The Final Destination“, let me explain it for you:
1. The movie starts with a group of young adults leaving a car race.
2. Suddenly, one of them predicts a catastrophic accident about to happen, and they all decide to leave the scene.
3. As they drive away, their car explodes, and we see several scenes of the survivors’ deaths in slow motion.
4. The title “The Final Destination” appears on the screen as the remaining characters realize that death is still pursuing them.
The film starts by depicting a tragic car race accident where viewers witness numerous gruesome deaths as spectators are hit when a car collides with the stands. However, just like in many similar films, a few individuals miraculously evade the disaster following a premonition. In this fourth movie, the title sequence is swiftly introduced right after the accident, and we’re shown animated X-ray scenes that highlight some of the innovative ways people met their demise in the preceding three movies.

A Twisted, Clever Nod To The First Three Movies
The opening scene references various fatal accidents from previous “Final Destination” movies, such as Billy Hitchcock’s beheading near train tracks, Evan’s eye contact with a fire escape ladder, Ashley and Ashlyn’s tanning bed accident, and other gruesome scenes. By doing so, it subtly introduces the main characters and crew members of “Final Destination 4” in a creative way that pays homage to the earlier films. Although these scenes were graphic in their original presentations, they take on an added layer of complexity when viewed from an X-ray perspective.
By providing an image of what could happen inside someone’s body when they encounter dangerous tools such as a nail gun or falling knife, it underscores their potentially harmful nature. However, even without this emphasis, these visuals remain quite intriguing and interesting.

As a cinephile, my affection for the original movie runs deep. Until I watched “Bloodlines” – which was truly remarkable, as per Eric’s glowing review – “Final Destination 3” held the top spot among the sequels for me. “Final Destination 5” and “Final Destination 2” weren’t far behind. To be honest, I don’t recall catching “The Final Destination” when it first hit theaters, but after rewatching it later and more recently as a precursor to “Bloodlines”, it feels a bit like watching “Jaws 3-D” on streaming, wondering if perhaps I would have appreciated it more (or at all) during its 3D theatrical run.
Although I didn’t experience the 3D version of “The Final Destination” in theaters, I can say that while it features some notable death scenes from the FD series, the overall film doesn’t resonate with me. However, the opening title sequence is surprisingly impressive and serves as a haunting yet beautiful tribute to the preceding films.
