It appears that this suggestion may sound controversial, but could the Hammer possibly be the finest and underappreciated weapon within the world of Monster Hunter Wilds?
As a dedicated Monster Hunter fan, I can’t help but resonate with this discussion, given how each of us has our preferred weapons in the game. However, what captivates me is none other than the mighty Hammer.
In the series, one of the initial weapons is the trusty Hammer, a timeless classic. This tool is designed primarily for whacking monstrous creatures. Oh, and by the way, there’s no need to question why we still hone it with a whetstone; it just does that.
Offset Attacks!
As a thrilled player, I’ve been reveling in the new enhancements to the Hammer’s move set! Now, during the second charge of its combo, there’s this fantastic offset attack at my disposal. This feature has transformed my gameplay, enabling me to effortlessly land offset attacks and skillfully parry monstrous assaults. The adrenaline rush I get every time I successfully execute one is indescribable – before the monster realizes it, they’re flat on their back, felled by a swift, satisfying blow!
In Monster Hunter Wilds, this was the improvement the Hammers truly lacked. Initially, when the game debuted, it struggled, but now it’s an excellent pick for hunters seeking that thrilling counter-strike. If you enjoy delivering powerful and swift blows, then the Hammer remains a reliable choice.
Sluggers!
The standout feature of the Hammer is its ability to stun monsters, allowing your team to deliver powerful follow-up attacks. If a monster moves too quickly for a counterattack, repeatedly striking its head will build up its stun level until it reaches its maximum point. At this stage, the monster collapses, with stars appearing above its head – an ideal moment for executing a Big Bang combo.

It’s great when players bring Hammers with a Stun build to multiplayer hunts! Luckily, weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds now have inherent abilities, and Hammers automatically have the skills of Slugger and Focus.
Low Skill Floor, High Skill Ceiling
The hammer is incredibly user-friendly as one of the simpler weapons to grasp, but its potential mastery level within the game ranks among the highest. Skilled players can strategically time their strikes at the optimal moment, just before a monster’s attack, or unleash a powerful spinning charge.
It’s noteworthy that although the Hammer might not be the most popular choice, Ryozo Tsujimoto, the producer of Monster Hunter Wilds, has been a dedicated user of the Hammer throughout the entire series. This strong endorsement certainly speaks volumes coming directly from him.
I must admit that I believe the Hammer is the top choice for weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds because it allows you to rapidly switch attacks during combat. While it can certainly deliver blunt damage, its true potential lies in the numerous opportunities it creates. It’s unfortunate, however, that there aren’t many players who specialize in using the Hammer these days.
