It’s no secret that I have a soft spot for all sorts of television programming. From top-notch fantasy shows and sci-fi series to engaging Netflix binges, I’m game for anything. However, there’s one show from my childhood that has managed to reemerge in my adult life.

And that’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

In the past, this television show was a favorite of mine, and by “love,” I mean there were instances when I found myself considering contacting those featured, as I often felt envious, yearning for the same quality of home renovations that Ty Pennington and his team performed on their homes.

As I grew older and gained more knowledge, I tended to forget about that old series. Yet, when news broke out that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was making a comeback for another season, I felt a pang of worry. However, upon watching the first few episodes, I must confess it has captured my heart once more as a once anxious fan. Here’s why:

The primary concern with the initial version of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was its tendency to go overboard. Essentially, if you could imagine the most extravagant home makeover possible, they would take that concept and make it even more extreme.

Although these residents weren’t provided with grand estates, the construction team would arrive, demolish their existing homes, create quite a disturbance in the process, and subsequently erect large houses that ultimately resulted in increased costs (like utility bills and property taxes) and various complications.

This problem was quite substantial. Initially, all these houses might have seemed very appealing, even to me when I was young. However, a Vice TV series titled “Dark Side of Reality TV” revealed that these new constructions and expensive renovations often had devastating consequences for many families (as reported by Realtor.com).

Originally, my concern about the reboot was prompted by the fact that one family had to resort to borrowing money, scale down their living situation due to exorbitant bills (specifically, an electric bill of $2,200), and ultimately sell the house. This made me worry because they seemed to be struggling to afford a realistic living environment.

The Reboot Focuses More On Organization And Realistic Standards

I’ve always been a well-structured individual, and that won’t change. I take great pleasure in creating lists, keeping items tidy, and ensuring my life appears well-organized. In fact, the core emphasis of this latest revival is precisely that.

Instead of transforming these houses into extravagant dwellings that are nearly unaffordable, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, the renowned hosts from The Home Edit, emphasize on building a home with their construction team that is not just functional but practical and feasible.

Rather than constructing new houses for the owners, it’s common practice to relocate their existing homes to another location. In this new spot, brand-new homes are built that closely resemble traditional houses, complete with conventional rooms such as kitchens and bedrooms, along with all the typical household items.

This version stands out because it emphasizes orderliness. It ensures everything finds its right place, incorporates hidden compartments for devices, promotes versatility, and crafts dwellings that genuinely evoke a sense of home rather than mere colossal mansions.

The New Hosts Make An Effort To DeClutter More Than Ever Before

In a more casual and engaging manner, consider rephrasing like this: Instead of binge-watching heartwarming rom-coms or streaming shows on Amazon to escape reality, I find myself drawn to the unique charm of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. What sets it apart for me is that they never give the family a chance to rest.

In the original series, families were often treated to a trip to Disney World, with the construction crew handling the rest of the work. In this updated version, the hosts actively involve the family in their “Edit Zone,” which is essentially a warehouse where everything from their home gets sorted out. The family decides what they want to keep and what they wish to donate.

Friends, I believe you might not fully grasp how extraordinary this endeavor is. Beyond instilling a sense of responsibility for clutter, it encourages active family participation in constructing our home. Moreover, it equips them with additional skills that will benefit them further down the line. Simply put, it’s fantastic!

I Can Realistically See Each Family Living In Their Homes Afterwards

Behold, a myriad of shows exist that can help with organization or inspire you. Incredibly, there’s a show for just about every interest – cooking included!

However, it’s not merely a matter of affection for this program; there’s something truly captivating about it. Not only does it motivate viewers to declutter and sort through their belongings, as I intend to do this weekend, but its authenticity resonates deeply with me.

In today’s world, it’s almost unbelievable to come across a home renovation that doesn’t require enormous additional costs due to upgrades. This show demonstrates that it is indeed possible. What strikes me the most is that I can genuinely visualize these people residing in these homes, and there’s something truly captivating about that image.

It seems like as I grow older, I’m becoming more aware of the flaws in the original series, yet I can’t ignore the genuine passion and hard work put into this reboot. Here’s to hoping there will be more of it in the future!
