For over three decades, I’ve been fortunate enough to carve out a storied career in Hollywood, earning an Academy Award along the way. Known for my versatility and captivating performances, I’ve graced the big screen in numerous critically acclaimed films such as “Monster,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Young Adult,” and “Atomic Blonde.” My physical prowess has been on full display throughout my filmography, and in 2020, I made a lasting impression as an immortal assassin in the Netflix blockbuster “The Old Guard.

As a fan, I followed “The Streaming Knockout,” where I shared the screen with stellar actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor and KiKi Layne. Playing Andromache “Andy” of Scythia, a centuries-old warrior, I dazzled audiences alongside my tightly-knit team of fellow assassins. Secretly safeguarding the mortal world from lethal perils, we also aided those in distress. When our extraordinary talents were unveiled, our timeless group embarked on a hazardous trek to conceal our immortality. The movie was a smash hit, and news of The Old Guard 2 quickly ensued; however, it’s been five long years since then, and we still haven’t seen the sequel. Let’s delve into why there’s been such a delay in its release.

‘The Old Guard 2’ Faced Multiple Production Setbacks

The action-packed series “The Old Guard” premiered on July 10, 2020, and swiftly turned into a popular streaming hit, as approximately 78 million households chose to watch Charlize Theron’s impressive display of martial arts and dispatching numerous enemies. Critics and viewers alike were left in awe by Theron’s commanding performance and the film’s exhilarating action scenes, intricate plot, and positive representation of LGBTQ+ characters. The Netflix original earned an exceptional 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Not surprisingly, it was announced that a sequel was in development by Netflix on January 27, 2021.

As a die-hard movie fan, I must admit that my excitement for “The Old Guard 2” has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Back in August 2021, the fantastic cast, including Angelina Jolie (Theron), KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Marwan Kenzari, all agreed to reprise their roles. Victoria Mahoney stepped in as director following Gina Prince-Bythewood’s departure. However, the momentum took a pause when, unfortunately, production faced a brief standstill.

The cameras eventually started rolling again in June 2022, this time in Italy, with Uma Thurman and Henry Golding joining the film in undisclosed roles. But just as we were getting back on track, the set experienced an unexpected setback – a fire that temporarily halted production until it was safely resolved in September 2022. Now, I’m eagerly waiting for the final outcome of this cinematic journey!

After almost two years without any news on “The Old Guard 2” and its release date, Theron disclosed that post-production for the sequel had halted five weeks into production due to executive changes at Netflix. However, she assured fans it was definitely in progress, stating to Variety in July 2024: “They were undergoing a lot of transitions, and I completely get it. We’ve since picked it up again, and I’m really looking forward to it.” The esteemed lead actress only wished to do “The Old Guard 2” if the narrative was well-crafted, with Theron noting:

This movie is truly exceptional for us. It’s a crucial piece of work that I was eager to bring to life, provided we could create something extraordinary. I have a deep affection for this film.

As of January 12, 2025, additional reshoots and photography are being planned and are expected to start in early summer. This means that fans will have to wait a bit longer for the release of The Old Guard 2, as these ongoing production activities suggest that the premiere date is not imminent, allowing the director and creative team time to polish the final details of this much-anticipated superhero film.
