Why This ‘Outlander’ Episode Is One of the Most Controversial Yet

As a loyal fan of Outlander for many years now, I must say that the latest episode left me absolutely flabbergasted! I’ve always known Jamie Fraser to be a man of honor and compassion, but his behavior in this week’s episode was simply baffling.

Being raised by a strong-willed mother and having experienced my fair share of heartbreak myself, I can understand the depth of Jamie’s grief over losing Claire. But, dear Lord, the way he treated both Lord John and young William Ransom was downright inexcusable!

First off, Jamie should have been there for William, who just found out that Jamie is his biological father. A revelation that would shake any young man to his core. Instead, Jamie left him in the hands of Continental soldiers and barely gave him a second thought afterwards.

And let’s not forget about Lord John, whose feelings for Jamie go way back. The intimate moment they shared, imagining Jamie between them as a way to cope with their loss, was understandable given the circumstances. But Jamie’s reaction was harsh and unforgiving, even after Claire explained that it was just a means to mourn him.

Now, I’m not saying Jamie isn’t allowed to be upset, but he’s always been a man of empathy and compassion. His behavior in this episode seemed out of character and left me wondering if the writers are setting us up for some major character development in the upcoming episodes.

All in all, I can only hope that Jamie regains his conscience and becomes the loving, caring father figure he’s always been to young William and a loyal friend to Lord John. And let’s not forget the joke – it’s just like Jamie to be so focused on his own feelings that he forgets to zip up his kilt! Outlander airs weekly on Starz.

As a long-time fan of the Outlander series, I must admit that I was eagerly anticipating Season 7 after binge-watching six seasons. However, I have to say that this new season has taken the emotional rollercoaster to a whole new level. Having followed Jamie and Claire’s journey for so long, I thought I was prepared for anything. But the latest episodes have tested my nerves in ways I didn’t expect.

Out of all the episodes aired so far on Starz, Episode 12 of Season 7, “Carnal Knowledge,” stands out as particularly controversial and baffling. As a woman who has been through her fair share of ups and downs in life, I found this episode to be incredibly intense and thought-provoking.

The way the story unfolds is unlike anything we’ve seen before in Outlander, and it left me questioning everything I thought I knew about the characters and their relationships. It was a rollercoaster of emotions that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season unfolds, but I have a feeling that this episode will be one that Outlander fans will be discussing for a long time to come.

The End of a Friendship in Episode 12 of ‘Outlander’ Season 7

To make it crystal clear, if the title “Carnal Knowledge” hasn’t already given it away, this episode revolves around an intimate moment shared between two characters. Although Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) have had their fair share of intimacy, this particular episode delves into the night spent between Claire and Jamie’s closest friend, Lord John Grey (David Berry).

When it was believed that Jamie had perished, these two found solace in each other by imagining the other as Jamie. The focus of Episode 12 is on the revelation that Jamie is, indeed, still alive, and the events that unfolded afterward when Lord John essentially confessed to having a physical relationship with his wife. This scene stands out as one of the most memorable in Outlander, ever.

Watching Lord John emerge from his protective shell and watching his character evolve in a captivating manner is equally thrilling, but this installment isn’t flawless. Initially, Jamie doubts him, but when he does believe, chaos ensues, leaving one to wonder if a lifelong friendship might be irreparably damaged. Following the heart-wrenching episode of Outlander, we’re immediately plunged into another contentious issue involving one of the series’ key characters.

Jamie’s Reaction to Claire and Lord John’s Marriage in ‘Outlander’

As Jamie unexpectedly reappeared, finding myself in a delicate situation with the British soldiers chasing him, I (Lord John) orchestrated his daring escape. In the heat of the moment, I chose to disclose our shared secret night with Claire – quite the shocking revelation! Dropping such a bombshell on anyone is challenging, but I can assure you, a passionate Scot like Jamie took it to another level, making me feel every ounce of his heated response.

Jamie, drawing strength from the Avengers’ Hulk, made Lord John realize that spending a night with Claire wasn’t a wise decision. The deep sense of betrayal Jamie felt was evident as he continued to confront his close friend. Although John attempted to justify their actions by claiming they were both overwhelmed by grief and sought solace in each other, imagining Jamie (or for the first time, in John’s case), Jamie showed no interest in listening.

In the eyes of some, Jamie’s unpredictable actions were partially justifiable, but others found them utterly surprising given how he treated his lifelong friend. This friend, who has been more than generous towards him, helping him countless times and even saving his life on multiple occasions, left many puzzled in Episode 12. Some viewers believe that Jamie’s behavior was out of the ordinary, as he not only attacked Lord John for spending a night with his wife, but also allowed a band of Continental soldiers to arrest John, falsely accusing him of being a spy and suggesting he should be hanged for this supposed crime.

The Controversy Around Jamie’s Behavior in ‘Outlander’ Season 7

Indeed, compared to many characters from Jamie’s clan or other Scots in the popular series, James Fraser stands out as the most forward-thinking one, if I may say so. To a certain extent, Claire played a significant role in this development, but it is important to note that Jamie has been a man prone to jealousy throughout all seasons of Outlander. This intense jealousy was particularly evident when he found out about Claire’s closeness with someone else, which understandably caused him great distress.

Claire and Lord John had a reason for spending an intimate time together, each in their own way. For Claire, who had just learned that her beloved husband was gone forever, finding solace in the presence of someone else seemed like the only appropriate response to her overwhelming grief. Lord John, on the other hand, has long harbored feelings for Jamie, a Scot whom he’s confessed his love to but could never share intimacy with. Together, they used their intimate moment – one where they both imagined it was Jamie they were with – as a means to cope with their sorrow and connect once more with the man they deeply loved.

It seems Jamie wasn’t affected by the explanation provided. No, it didn’t have an impact at all. Perhaps the spinoff Outlander: Blood of My Blood might shed light on where Jamie inherited his stubbornness from. Despite his feelings being hurt, he seemed to overlook what truly mattered. Right after appearing unexpectedly, following everyone’s belief that he was deceased, William discovered that Jamie was actually his biological father, as he eavesdropped on a conversation between Jamie, John, and Claire.

In a crucial moment, it would have been compassionate for Jamie to stand by William, who had just learned an earth-shattering truth about his identity and been betrayed by everyone around him. Instead, Jamie opted to flee using Lord John, leaving behind British soldiers in pursuit. Later on, he casually quizzes Claire about minor details, seemingly oblivious to the fact that his abandonment of John could lead to his execution at the hands of the Continental soldiers. It seems you’re lacking empathy, Jamie.

As someone who has experienced heartbreak and its aftermath, I can empathize with Jamie’s situation after learning about what happened between Claire and John. The pain of betrayal can be crippling, and it’s only natural that it would affect his relationships with others. However, his behavior towards those around him is unacceptable, and I believe it’s important to recognize that such actions are out of character for someone who cares deeply about his closest friends and loved ones.

I hope that Jamie will find a way to regain some sense of self-awareness and take responsibility for his actions. In doing so, he may be able to begin the healing process and learn from this experience. It would also be wonderful if he could finally be there for William in a meaningful way, providing him with the support and guidance he needs.

I’m excited to watch Outlander each week on Starz and see how Jamie’s character develops as the story unfolds. I have faith that he will eventually find his way back to the man we all know and love.
